Just saw on the news another guy fell through the ice. He was on a ATV when he went through.
I just don’t understand the “early ice” bite vs the “safe bite” ice thing. Does the fish taste that much better that you risk your life for it?

I’m hoping I don’t hear about any on Mille Lacs while I’m up there. Heard there’s already wheelers and side by sides all over the Isle area. I’m walking out…..

Another loaded question? Shocker
It’s more about knowledge of ice conditions than “risking your life”. You risk your life every time you go on “safe” ice. You risk you life every time you get in an automobile. According to the insurance companies, some people are riskier than others. Typically less experienced drivers carry higher risk.
That brings me back to this topic. Less experienced ice fishermen are going to be higher risk therefore we hear about them in the news.
You seem to have a problem with anything I post lately. Maybe you should skip over them.
You’re the one always looking for an argument, or trolling, or both.
You guys act like teenage girls. Maybe one day you’ll get along?
Dutch only asked a question. By the way, they taste the same. I do both.
I still remember that young couple that went through on Red on last year’s Thanksgiving weekend. So senseless to lose two young lives like that. I’m glad this guy survived.

Yes, there’s always those that seem to have to prove something…either to the rest of the world or maybe just themselves.
Plain and simple to those of us that realize why push the envelope with your life.
Going out on Mille Lacs, check in with the resort, follow their advice, warnings they tell you and be glad to hand over the small amount of $ they earned by going out there and carefully checking ice conditions at their own risk so that you can go out where they’ve already been and determined to be good.
Tim Chapman and most all of those resorts have been at this their entire life and have seen it all!

Andy I’m going out of Chapman’s. Have nothing but good things to say about Tim and his operation. Always been a real stand up guy to me.

Yes sir…and not just Tim. Tina his wife is as much involved with the business as Tim, if not more. She heads the Mille Lacs Tourism Bureau also. Tim does the guiding and lake work, Tina sets the rules.
Chapman’s report from today…
“We will be allowing ATVs (NO side-by-sides) this weekend. If you are coming with an ATV I recommend you unload on the street unless taking trailer with you because turn-around within the resort is very tight and you may not unload on the ice.
Starting Friday we will allow SMALL single axle wheelhouses no more than 16ft measured from the back of house to tip of the V if it has one. NO exceptions and please don’t make me (Tina) come out and measure for you.
You need to stay in the bay.”
Tina says…”don’t make me come out and measure for you.”

Follow the Money;
This a topic that I rail on every year.
Unfortunately; those who stand to make a profit have Marketed early ice opportunities very heavily.
There are those that have the experience and who feel they can safely navigate on thin ice. But it also indirectly encourages less experienced anglers to venture onto unsafe ice.
I think the last few years industries leader have done a better job at recognizing the effect that they have on the younger anglers.
I whole heartily agree with Dutch Boy on this Early ice topic.
It’s comparable to tobacco marketing that is targeted at Adults but discourage young kids not to smoke; wink wink.
I think promoting early ice fishing as being fundamentally unsafe is amusing. Early ice can be safe.
Traveling on hardwater always has dangers that are compounded by weather, motorized vehicles, children, pets, drugs and alcohol, size and type of water, physical and mental state of participants, or a host of other issues. Early isn’t the biggest problem with hardwater safety, it’s just one of many compounding factors.

The generalization in this thread makes it impossible to disagree with. However, I don’t think there’s one manufacturer that is even remotely indirectly promoting early ice fishing. You need to go to YouTube and tv to find the ones indirectly promoting it. My subscriptions in youtube is full of early ice videos right now mostly from career youtubers. One of which posted a video of them falling through.
One really interesting thing I found is that ice related deaths in mn seems to be pretty spread out throughout the ice fishing season on average. That suggests they changing ice condityplayva bigger part in ice safety than early or late ice.

Take a look at the top of the topics column
Not to mention the new rage of floating Ice suits
Not to mention the new rage of floating Ice suits
So something to make the entire ice fishing experience safer is making it less safe? How many ice fatalities have been wearing a float suit?
Someone has to be on first.
I don’t think there is going to be a person on shore blowing a whistle for a start time.

And now they are putting airbags in all cars, somebody’s getting rich and those buying the vehicles are just asking for a front end collision….

If you are old enough for Abbott & Costello you get it, otherwise you tube or google it.

Wrong answer.
Naturally.
