Tire suggestions

I didn’t want to step on the other truck thread so I am starting this one.

On my 2014 Ram Cummins I curranty run Michelins. When I was pulling my equipment trailer all the time I found those the best for wear. The downside is they seem to be loud. Lots of road noise. I’ll be looking to get another set in the next 3 weeks. Trailer towing is no longer the concern it once was. My requirements are they must be good in snow (not thinking I need snow tires) and yet quiet when running on dry pavement. Years ago I always had good luck with Goodyear.

Any input? Keep in mind I will be buying from a local shop so don’t recommend Tire Rack or any of the other on-line guys.

    Thank you.

    Dutch,
I’ve been running michelin agilis crossclimate on my 2500 Ram Cummins. So far so good. Got bout 10K on them and all is well, the guy at Discount tires said they are the cats meow. We’ll see.
Have had a 2500 cummins for 6-7 years now and never seen 45K out of a set a tires yet.

I always got more miles then that. But I found I had to rotate religiously. I ran synthetic oil and did a oil change / tire rotation every 10,000 miles. But most of my miles are freeway miles also.

I’m happy with the wear on the Michelins, just looking for a quieter ride.

Dutch get me your size and I can see what is available if you want. I have managed auto repair my whole life and sold thousands of tires. Usually Michelin tires are known for being quite so not sure what happened there. Goodyear has the Wrangler Adventurer AT, but that might be more aggressive ie noisy than your Michelins.

And last I would like to thank you on behalf of service centers for shopping local instead of the online giants, we appreciate that even though tires are a low profit item.

A mechanic friend of mine, also runs tow trucks swears by Michelin LTX M/S for his tow trucks. He said they last the longest and work the best in Minnesota climate. I was skeptical because they seem more like an aggressive summer tire than all-season, but I put them on my Avalanche and they are great tires. For sure the best I have ever had on my trucks.

No need to thank me. I am a firm believer in taking care of those who are business owners where you live. I will always give the local lumber yard a opportunity to match (not beat) Menards. Everyone need to make a profit to survive. I have no problem with that.

I run Michelins myself on all my vehicles, We just replaced the tires on my wife car and found out Michelin owns Uniroyal so we thought we would give them a try, sofar so good, they seem to have better grip than the Michelins that we have been running on her escape and are very quiet, I know this is comparing apples to oranges but might be a option to look into on their truck line of tires.

I have run Adventurer AT for the last 4 tire changes on my SUV. Have not found them to be noisy although an SUV might be quieter than a pickup.

Best AT tire I’ve ever had for an SUV. Great snow traction, good on slick/muddy two-tracks, and lasts a long time for highway. I get over 50k a set on an AWD which IME is good for an AWD vehicle.

Michelins myself x2 Ltx mud and snow are great make sure you rotate and balance frequently have them on 2018 Silverado getting close to 60,000 miles on then now. When the time comes they will be replaced the same.

John recommended this tire for my F-150 back in November. I’ve used them for about 40 days now. I used them during deer season and several times now late season pheasant hunting, in addition to everyday driving conditions. So far I am satisfied with them. I also received a $75 mail in rebate when I purchased a set of 4 that came in the form of a Visa Debit card.

Glad to hear your are happy with your purchase still gimruis

Grouse I didn’t mean to imply they were noisy, just that Dutch mentioned the Michelins were noisy for him. Those Goodyears are great, me being a Goodyear guy for a long time I still wish they had not gotten rid of the Wrangler Silent Armor, that tire was awesome!

Good luck on your search Dutch, again if you want more input PM me your size and I would be happy to look for you. Also the Toyo Open Country AT3 are another good option again a little more aggressive even than the goodyear.

I would recommend Copper AT3 XLT’s, great warranty and pretty quite for a fairly aggressive tread. I have had them on three different 1 ton Diesels and they lasted 15k more miles than my 2 prior sets of BFG K02’s.

After looking I would for sure go with the Goodyear Wrangler Adventure AT they have them at a good price in your size I could do them for $189.00 per tire plus mount, balance, tax and disposal. They are still offering the rebate mentioned above. Another one to consider is the Firestone Transforce AT2 they are almost $30.00 more per tire. I only gave you prices for reference I know your way up nort!

What I’ve found with the Michelin ltx is there to hard, better off with the m/s. I ran them on a 2500 duramax, never again. Sure you got the mileage out of them, but they sucked in snow and ice. I’m running general grabbers now and there pretty decent all around tire, not terribly priced and bought from my neighborhood shop. Little more road noise then I care for but these trucks now days the cabs are to quite!

No offence meant, but you are the only one I have heard liking that tire, or at least the last generation of them cupped supper easy, and did not have great traction. Glad there working for you though. waytogo

X2 – Also NOT a quiet tire on the highway. Terrible traction on snow. Turn and run IDO’ers!!

I have not had good luck with coopers either. Loud and would not buy that brand again.

If you want the best traction you are going to have noise and shorter tire life. If you want the most miles they will be quiet and short on traction. You cannot have the best of both–mileage&traction. It is not possible. You have to compromise and get something lacking on either end of the traction/mileage graph. Pick what is most important to you.
The other option is 2 sets of tires. A winter set and a summer set.

Well maybe I have been lucky with my Coopers! Our Ford Super Duties lately have come with the Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure With Kevlar and I have not been a fan of them at all. I have a 2020 with 21k miles on the stock tires and they will be lucky to make it to 30k before they are junk.

    Highly recommend Michelin LTX M/S2.
    Expensive but worth it, IMO
My 2007 Chevy had 2 sets on it and both were great in the snow and ice, quite ride and long lasting.
My 2020 Chevy has Goodyear Fortitudes on it, while they get good reviews they do not compare with what I had with the LTX M/S2.
I will be switching back to Michelin tires when these Fortitudes wear out.

I like the BF goodrich ko2s. I know some people have had bad luck with them. For me they have been great. 2 sets of them on this truck with 130,000 miles. Just have to watch how they are wearing and adjust air pressure accordingly.

Michelin LTX A/T2 lt265/70r18 ( believe the ratio is correct for my 2012 Duramax. This is my second set on my truck with 130,000 miles and after the winter most likely will be getting new set of 4. My last truck had the same tires and was on its 3rd set when I sold it with 175K miles. I like them!

I have about 30000 on mine they seem to be wearing well. today I realized why I don’t like them. not very good in snow. 2″s of snow and slid past my driveway on a gravel road. my wife’s car stops better then my pickup with at3 tires.
