    Hey everyone,

I recently found this small lake (100 acres, PDF attached), and I’m looking for some tips on how to ice fish it for bluegill and crappies this winter. The “Pa” on the second picture are pallet reefs that people have found. I’m relatively new to ice fishing, so any and all tips are really appreciated. Location: Central Iowa

I am no expert but for crappie I would target deep holes down to about 35 ft. Looks like there are two that meet that description near the top of the picture and the middle portion. I don’t fish for bluegills much but I think they like healthy green weeds ranging anywhere from 5-15ft. If I were targeting bluegills I would punch a lot of holes in search of good vegetation

Straight out from the boat landing left of the island, punch a bunch of hole shallow and down the break. Gills should be shallow, crappies shallow or off the break. First part of the year. DK.

All the breaks on the five prominent points next to the long back bays. All the deeper sides of the island. Make swiss cheese of the ice in those those areas to tune in on the water clarity (light/dark) and weed growth and micro structure – I like to use a water camera for this. Take a trip to the Navionics online webapp, and see if the pallet and brush pile fish cribs plotted there for this lake exist, too…
