Tip ups for panfish

Hey guys, I’m looking to try to use some sort of tip up system for crappies. I have tip downs but I’m looking for something I could use with my jigging poles for deeper water. Is there anything out there that is sensitive enough for a crappie? Something like the HT ice rigger, clam arctic warrior, or ifish pro? Thank you.

Curious on why you don’t think tip downs work in deeper water. I’ve used them in 30 feet of water and thought they work well. If it is really cold, they don’t work well because the hole freezes pretty quick.

I use regular rail type tip-ups for perch and crappies with no problems at all as long as they don’t have a notched “T” at the top of the spool. Those that do have a bit too much resistance for my liking. I also use those First Strike doohickeys and they work well also but when holes are freezing up I prefer a typical tip-up where the spool is underwater.

I carry a pile of tip-ups along when targeting perch and set them up like a dead stick rod. Jigging spoons, horizontal jigs, small trebles, etc. tied onto 18 inches or so of 4lb mono. I also have a set of tip-ups (stick type) set up for bluegills.

Tip-ups are very underutilized for panfish and allow you to efficiently cover a ton of water. They are great for schooling fish like perch. Put a spread of tip-ups out and flags popping up will give you a clear picture of how schools are cycling through an area allowing you to stay in front of them better than by simply hole hopping.

Ifish Pro’s, with a little bit of a modification you can make those babies extremely sensitive! I use them for perch and crappies all the time!

I don’t like tip downs in deep water because I find that hand lining often causes a mess. You might be good at it but for me it is just a hassle. I also want something that I can leave the spool open. My buddy lost a pole down the hole yesterday and it wasn’t like we weren’t paying attention, the fish just grabbed and ran really fast.

What might this modification be? Whenever my flag has gone up while fishing for crappie, they let go by the time I get there to set the hook.

Funny, just last Sunday I stumbled across some basin crappie without any tip-downs. I ended up using two Frabill (round) tip ups set light and baited with the smallest shiners in my bucket as back up while I hole hopped with my third line. Picked up a few that way, but I would call it more of a “use what you have, where you are…” scenario and not a go-to system. I’m interested in the IfishPro’s myself-watching them catch perch on them right here, can’t be that much different setting for crappie can it?
Not to derail, but Gawd I love the UL Rippin Rap!

Just the reasons that I use a safety line attached from the butt of the pole to the Tip Down frame. I also use 6# black main line connected to a small swivel and then a 4# floro leader, no problem seeing the line on the ice.

Safety line is in the pics.
