Does a guy need to use a wire leader when they are running 20# black braided tip up line?

Nah, I don’t you need one but I like to use them because they are less visible than just the black braid. Maybe? Who knows

I always use leaders on my tipups. The leader material I use depends on what fish I might catch. If there are pike, I will use either wire leader material or heavier mono. If I were just fishing for bigger pike, I would use wire leader material. If I’m fishing for walleyes, I would use mono (8 – 12 lbs).

I lost a monster pike this weekend, I was using 30lb mono as a leader…I will now solely use steel leader if I am targeting pike. I usually use 10-12lb mono for walleye.

A heavy fluro 20-40 test works well too……

Plus or minus 8# flouro for walleye. Typically steel w/cross lock for pike but occasionally 30 or 40# fluoro. I don’t do enough pike fishing through the ice though.

I usually run a 30 lb flouro leader attached to my braid by a barrel swivel. Knock on wood, but I haven’t lost a fish since I started doing this 4 or 5 years ago.

I use 50# as cuts into hands less. Used to tie hooks directly to for pike and only lost couple over the years. Now days use polure 27# #4 tip-up rig or 30# titanium leader and catch quite a few walleye along with pike.

I decided to put a wire leader on my pike tip-ups and 14# Fluro on my walleye tip-ups

I use a 20# fluoro leader on my tip ups and pike jigging setups, I check for nicks and I’ve never been bit off.

Most situations for me I do. Length depends on ice thickness. Battling a large pike into the hole can be made much easier when the leader is longer or close to the length of ice. Makes turning the head up the hole alot easier and removes fear of breaking line. My walleye tip ups I generally run 10 feet or so of mono as a leader in 10pound. never had really any issues with any of this. Sometimes the mono can get a little unruly on the ice and needs to be coached back down the whole on windy days and such but the benefit of a more stealthy approach generally out ways the negatives.
