Tip-up line

I have re-tooled my tip-ups and am searching for the right line. I like a heavier /thicker line because it is easier to hang onto and untangles around the hole easily. The old dacron line in 50 pound fit the bill well but it sucks up water and freezes more than I would like. I spooled up with Beaver Dam 50 pound nylon and was shocked at the excessive amount of stretch. It was hard to get a hook set. Almost like setting the hook with a rubber band. Any other nylon line I have tested had too much stretch. I was looking at the suffix tip-up line in 50 pound pound but nobody has it in a store so I can get handle on it’s thickness/feel. I was considering 80 pound super line but I think it will still be a little thin. Any suggestions? Mrt.

I have been using the Sufix tip up line and thats been working fine for me, the last 10 feet or so I used Florocarbon.

Can’t go wrong with Mason, IME.

Does Mason make a line other than nylon? I have 3 spools of Nylon Mason and it has some stretch to it. I pulled off 20 feet and there was at least 2 feet of give to it before it stopped stretching. That is not a big deal except if you have a big pike clinching your bait very tightly. I lost several good fish after some pretty hard first runs. I don’t think I ever got a hook into them. They were pulling way too hard to be just grabbing the bait. That’s why I am trying to get away from stretch. Mrt.

I use mason line on almost all of my tip ups. I do use a fluorocarbon leader as well. I haven’t lost any fish due to the mason line and the stretch. The only complaint I have is that it freezes down to the ice in the -temps. Most line will freeze a little to the ice after being in the water. I am always able to get it up from the ice, just have to pull harder.

The Suffix V-coated tip up line is excellent for cold weather and has virtually zero stretch.
