Tip Up Issues

What line does everyone use for Tip Ups? Every time I catch a fish the line is a mess and tangled everywhere. Has anyone tried Fly Fishing Line? Is there a better way to manage the mess of line when pulling in a fish?

I have a friend who uses cheap fly line on his rattle reels, it works real nice and rarely gets tangled. (And if it does, it’s an easy fix) I use some cheap, thick black “catfish line” that’s really visible so it doesn’t get tangled and I just have a 6 foot mono leader on that. I haven’t had any real issues with that

It’s all about pulling the line back with one hand. Left hand holds line coming out of hole and right pulls line in stacking it. Hard to explain but also helps if someone can spool line back on tipup as you pull line in. They make a braided line that helps too.

Have only used fly line on rattle wheels, never tip ups, but I would assume it would work just as well outside as it does in a shack.

I’ve always used HT vinyl ice line and it’s been great for me.

Yup, vinyl tip up line. Fly line is way too thick and stays coiled when it’s coming off. Like trying to fish with a slinky. Vinyl isnt perfect either but until you get used to the the method buck slayer mentioned it’s your best choice. Once you get used to it you’ll go back to the Dacron or braid.

Dont scatter slush around all those shards catch your line.
Make sure to pile the line down wind.
Use the hand line method described in a previous post.

I enjoy running flags, but these little thinks make a huge difference, Especially when you need to pay line back out.
