I was out today and just heading back to the ramp when all of a sudden my motor just trimmed all the way down. WOW did throw me off!
I was only 100 yards for the launch. When I got in and turned to motor off, I hit the trim button and it worked both ways. So I trimmed it up, turned on the key and it immediately went back down ! ! ! Dammit…Salmon fishing this Friday-Sat-Sunday….

Any idea out there IDOer’s what’s up???? Ideas and help appreciated…
It’ll be heading to the shop Monday afternoon….hope it’s and easy, quick, and inexpensive fix…

Sounds like an electrical gremlin. Pull the cover and look for a pinched or frayed wire. It would be easier for people to help you if we knew what motor it is and if it’s a tiller or wheel boat.

x2 for a Relay issue. A few years ago while at Everts I came out to a dead battery. When I charged it up I could hear a clicking noise under the hood. Mine did the same thing.

    2001 200HP Evinrude wheel w/hydraulic steering

Relay…..hummm….I was thinking that or the ignition switch itself.
Is this ‘relay’ an easy ‘DIY’ fix or better left to the mechanics?

    Thanks for the replies

I replaced the relays in my Merc last fall. Parts cost about $30 and it took about 15 minutes to swap them out. Your Evinride however might be different.

Those relays probably look like a little module, like an inch square, and it should have a connector with a bunch of wires coming off it.

If it is the relay it is a pretty simple fix….you have an up relay and a down relay under the hood ,2 small(about an inch square) that just plug in…
I’ll take a picture of mine and post after I do my Sunday morning chores )

    Rootski & Mud – Thanks
Mud, In the fuse box on the starbaord side of the motor under the hood, there are 2 square fuse looking (relays) on the right side of the panel, one above the other.
Are these what your speaking of?

That looks like the relays in motor.

    Yep…Those are the ones….
Try switching them around….if the motor goes up instead of down then that is the problem….
If not it is probably one of the switches……

Both switches work with the key off.
I’ll try the switching those around right after lunch here.

    I’ll report back…

    Thanks

OK, Mudshark, I gave those relay’s a couple raps with the screw driver handle (if one rap is good, two’s better) and WALLA > everything works.

Called the local NAPA and the closest relay is in Chicago (they have 1) and there are 2 out on the East Coast….

Guess I’ll be calling my Local OMC guys tomorrow…

    Thanks gentleman for the discussion…

That relay is about the most common electrical item made. Radio shack and Grainger will have them in stock for about $5. I think we used 9 of them when wiring snow plow lights, also popular when installing auto sterios and security systems. They used to be made by Bosch but I think someone else makes them now.
