So how has the fiahing been at Red Wing? I might be coming up to fish it this weekend but wanna know if the bite is worth it. Traveling from SW Iowa it has to be pretty good for me to make the trip! Any updates would be awesome! Thanks

Red wing to me has always been one of those places where you have to create your own luck. Seems like if you hear about a good bite its already over by the time you get there
Right now the bite has been really good for some and slow for others.
It seems to me …if you are one that knows the area, thinks outside the box and stay away from the crowds you should do well !
If you think you can catch numbers of fish with 50-75 boats in an small area you are wrong !
Lindy rig style fishing has produce some good numbers as of late.
Remember you cant catch them if you dont go out !
Good luck and be safe ! please report back if you do choose to go.
JMHO Jeff
Had a great day this Saturday, but most others didn’t. The fish haven’t spawned yet so the best is yet to come in the next week or two imo.
Well living in SW Iowa I kinda have to have a pretty good idea that the bite is going good before I make the trek up that way. I have a good friend that lives in the cities I would be going with and he went Sunday and got skunked. And also neither of us are familiar with the River at all. Sunday was just his second time ever fishing it for walleyes.
I was down last weekend and we had a tough bite. It could turn on any day and be lights out, so I wouldn’t wait too long. Sounds like some females are dropping their eggs already.
I seen guys spanked them on Sunday. And they stayed away from the crowds. Its on everts fb page. And my buddy spanked them on Monday. So take it as you want. Run up to the dam before sun up then get away and go find em. Or sit on your couch and don’t catch nothing.
But you are in Iowa u can always shed hunt lol.
Good luck
Just got back from pool 4 today. It’s a tuff bite up there. I got a few nothing of size 18 incher was the biggest.
Most I saw brought in on one day was 6 and nothing over 23 inches. Most I got was 3 and a few small ones that I put back in the drink.
I had to work my tail off the last day to get three overs. First two days was real tuff.
Marked fish in many different spots and put everything but TNT down to them and they were in a negative state.
I would say wait and spend your money another day up there.
I would say wait we landed a black buff.I had a sturgeon on that was so big that I don’t want to talk about it. That’s it been fishing down there since 1984. I found 43dg water and 38deg water supposed to snow tomorrow.
Females dropping eggs? If you say so. Its close but don’t bull crap the guy. Bite is slow. Even away from the crowd. Need a few more degrees. Im sure a few guys in the know found some pods. We did as well, but the bite is slow. Small males haven’t even made a good push yet.
The boats that are fishing further down stream seem to be having better numbers then the boats hanging at the dam over the last 4 days. This includes 2 man limits.
I spoke with Marty Hahn the guide yesterday and they had 72 fish in his boat at the end of his trip.
But it’s true there are plenty of people that can’t get the skunk out of the boat. Stop into the bait shop and we’ll do our best to get you on fish.
I hope to create some soon ! need a horseshoe maybe And spawned out ? Its early yet…water temp seems plenty cool yet ? And I’m going to Everts for the 411 …need all the help I can get
played hookie and made it dwn there yesterday.
it was probably the slowest day ive ever had dwn on P4, but not a bad outing tho
the bite is tough/slow/light rite now but there are still fish to be had. we ended the day with 15 fish and kept 5 for dinner
V-jiggin with jig/minnow (orange wrkd best) got most of the fish
only a hand full of bites on plastic/2 fish caught. water temp was 41.6 warmest i found.
slow presentation was the key. i wouldve anchor on a spot i kept pikin up a fish or 2 in but didnt have enough anchor rope to hold in yesterdays wind.
i hear what ur saying though, makin a trip of any type takes time, money, planning….
so its always best to try and know wat to expect ahead of time. i do think give it a couple of wks or so and i’ll be going bonkers dwn there.
come on Rain and High water (only til full bank, not over the bank) lol!!!
on a side note,
theres some very good wally/sauger waters in IA. the DesMoines river, iowa can have some pretty good spring runs as well.
kinda funny but im makin a Coralville trip in april
im headin dwn to IA ur heading to MN lol
I would say wait we landed a black buff.
Shawnkurth, that looks like a blue sucker! Black buffalo or blue sucker – rare catch either way.
