I run a CLAM Legend Thermal XL and its been awesome. I am a big dude at 6’4 and I have plenty of room for everything. I also like it because the small buddy heater is perfect and can run on low and be nice and warm.

My questions is for the guys who say they ran out of room in a one man? What are you bringing with that you ran out of room!? I bring the kitchen sink with and never feel like I am to crowded.

I guess I’m the rare 1 man house fan. I rarely use a heater in mine. I fish outside much of the time so having a small and light 1 man shack to carry all my stuff in and act as a wind break when needed, is nice. Paired with a little buddy if I bring a heater and I could fish in it all day.

This is me too. 90% of the time it’s just a wind break. Great for packing light and keeping mobile. I almost never remember to pack my heater, but if I did and was willing to park my butt long enough, I’d toast myself out of there in no time.

I have a Clam Voyager and an Otter Hideout. I mainly fish by myself so use the 1 man 95% of the time, but that will change as my boy gets older.

Obviously the 1 man is easier to pull around which is great for early ice and nice that I don’t have to pull a trailer around with ATV or snowmobile as the 2 man is harder to pull by hand. The 1 man as it fits nicely in the back of my truck along with all other gear, 2 man does fit too, but rod cases and some gear has to go in the back seat.

I went with the otter hideout since the seat is on the narrow side of the sled so I don’t have to deal with collapsing and extending poles when moving which makes it faster to setup and take down, the hoops are all fixed length on the Hideout.

I can fit plenty of gear in the 1 man. I have 2 Lost Creek hard side rod cases for a total of 10 combos, a small cabelas tackle bag with 4 3600 planos, a buddy heater, 2 spare 1lb propane tanks, measuring board, ice skimmer, small strikemaster minnow bucket, Otter shovel, and my pistol bit and drill. All of this fits under the Otter cover. If pulling by hand my helix sits on top so I can see GPS, if using snowmobile or ATV the helix is on that. IMO this borders on too much stuff anyways, I definitely don’t need more.

The only thing I don’t like like about the Hideout is it’s short for standing up in. I’m not very tall and still think it’s short.

I have an Otter Lodge and Hideout. I also fish by myself 80% of the time, so I spend a lot of time in my Hideout. For early ice I pull by hand and can fit my auger, minnow bucket, Humminbird, bag of batteries/food, rod box, and shovel all in the sled. I hook up a Shapell jet sled and have my heater, minnows, and propane tank in there. Pulls pretty easy with the weight more spread out.

I have enough room for 2 holes, my buddy heater, flasher, and the minnows out in front. I stagger the holes left front and right back. Plenty of room. The sides are pretty tight, but when you factor in how easy it is to pull early ice and how light it is to load into the truck, it’s worth it to me. It’s also super warm and many days I don’t even run the heat. The seat comes off so it fits perfect under my tonneau cover. It doesn’t leave the bed of my truck all ice season.

I did look at the Eskimo Wide 1 and the Clam XL before I bought my Hideout. It was a tough decision, but I like that I don’t have to extend poles and I already owned an Otter, and I like how tough the poles, canvas and tub were.

If you aren’t sure if you want to go as small as an actual one man, check out the Clam Nanook XL. It’s probably the smallest two man on the market and most likely the lightest as well. I had the original Nanook a few years ago and I thought it was the perfect one man. Light enough to pull a good distance without a smitty, big enough to BARELY fit two full size men, but also the perfect size for one person, a deadstick setup and all your gear.

The latest version (Nanook XL) is slightly larger. The only downsize is the sled is not as deep as most flip over sleds. However for some, this is actually a positive. I think I’m going to sell my Yukon XL and go back to the Nanook next season.

One of my fishing buddies also has the Clam Nanook. His is the insulated version. He fishes in it alone and really likes it.

I got a one man Eskimo and I love it. Light to pull by yourself and sets up quick and easy. I think you’d be happy. Light enough I can throw it in the truck by myself as well.

I have a Jason Mitchelle 1 man flip over house. I do not like the door system it seems I have to crawl out of it to get out. I started just lifting the house to get out but all my heat goes then and I can not bank it. Inside has plenty of room for me 6’2″ 280. I run a jig rod and a deadstick. I think it would be better if I had a rod holder attached to the pole for the snare rod I use as a dead stick. I drill 2 7.5″ holes and use a small buddy heater you screw onto the 1 pound tanks to heat it. -20 on LOTW with the wind howling and it kept it nice and warm till I had to open it up to get out. The clam seat in it could defiantly be better but it folds flat and fits under the cover on my bed and fits nicely into my 5’6″ F150 box.

The Eskimo Sierra Thermal is 82#, the Wide One Inferno is 62#. I bet if you don’t install (or pull out) the second seat in the Sierra Thermal that it’s not much more than than 70#. Not a huge weight penalty for the extra fishable space (22.5sq ft vs 14.8sq ft). I have a lightweight one man thermal and wish I’d gotten a 2 man shack just for the space.

I have a 1 man flip over and an Otter Hub. If we are setting up shop for quite a while or have multiple people fishing with each other directly, I take the hub. This is probably more common for me now, but when I am really after fish at all costs – I load up the 1 man.

My 1 man is an older (6-7 years) Frabill that has just the top insulated. It gets too hot with one of those sport cat coleman heaters that screws on the 1#ers. The entire rig probably weights 40lbs. It fits my K-Drill, small heater, rod box, a 5 gallon bucket with minnow bucket inside, scoop, picks, and a tiny cooler with snacks or beer. I use a nice long rope with a black foam wrap over my chest. I pull it where few other people go over rip-rapped shorelines, across inlets, over trees and through muck crossing islands, etc. and it keeps going. When I’m really looking to put on miles or fish current areas with thinner ice here on the river, this is what I take. So many guys fish from a “portable” but it’s such a tank they drag it 200 yards full of crap and never have the guts to move. It may as well be a skid shack. My 1 man takes 30 seconds to flip back, drill a couple holes, and move everything 15 – 20 yards…which is how I cover ground.

Second the Nanook XL. Over 20sq ft fishing area and I like that the tub isn’t deep. You can ditch the 2 seats in it and replace with lightweight camp chair(s) or whatever. This shaves off a lot of weight, and lowers the top profile so you can load and unload with 1 person in lots of different vehicle types. Also easy to store away in the summer

Only downfall is the runner kit. Screws stick out like an inch in the tub after install. I will be replacing this summer on my own dime.

    Clam should fix this issue.

I have a Legend XL Jason Mitchell version not sure there is a lot of difference from the regular legend XL other that the color. But I like it a lot. Been using it for 2 years when its just me I don’t pack much. I am a bigger guy and there is plenty of room for a few holes and a heater. I am a big fan of it! I have a Eskimo 650 hub when I go with more people.

I used to use a hub, but I think hubs are royal PITA putting up, taking down, especially in the wind.

Finally got a 1 man flip (Shappel FX100). No problem fitting all my gear, lightweight so getting in the bed of the RAM not an issue. A bit tight with Buddy heater, flasher and camera but big enough for two holes.

Wish I would have known about the longer screws, would have bought shorter ones.I fixed the problem with a Dremel and cutoff disk.

For those that have the Otter Hideout, is it able to be towed by an ATV with the towbar? Is it able to attach to the Hideout?

The standard tow hitch works with the hideout. The large does not.
