Not cooking or a recipe really, but Glenn is always singing the allocades of Northern Pike and had to share this with him.

Our cabin is five miles away from Castle Danger’s very own Rustic Inn restaurant, located right on Highway 61 about twenty miles further up the shore from Two Harbors. Carole and I dropped in there Monday of this week for an early dinner. One of the items was Fish and Chips featuring the fish of the day. Often its Lake Herring that’s featured and its a no brainer when they offer that. This day it was batter fried Northern Pike. Just for giggles I ordered it and then Ma did likewise.

After ordering we sat there sipping an ice cold Castle Danger Brewing Cream Ale. No more than five minutes later I see two huge plates full of chow headed our way. There’s like eight BIG pieces of fish on each plate and I thought they must really want to get rid of this slimmer flesh. One bite was all it took. No tartar sauce. No lemon. A little salt and it was devour time. This pike dinner was superb and that fish was done perfectly. The fries were out of this world good but that fish went first, then the fries. That pike was outstanding. I’m not saying that the Pike would do better than the Herring but in this case the Pike would certainly stand along side Herring, it was that good.

Just thought you’d like to know Glenn that I do occasionally eat Pike. lol

once a pike gets in the 4 lb range I take the Y-bones out. y-bone goes into the pickling brine.

nice to hear you enjoyed it!!!!! waytogo waytogo its my 2nd favorite Minnesota fish to eat next to the sunfish!!!!

Pike ranks well above walleye for me. Just below the mighty bluegill.

I’ll do a burger before walleye. I like crappies/sunfish, herring and now pike as white meated fish. Salmon and Lake trout and stream trout for red meat freshwater fish, in that order.

I tell ya biggill, when I get a herring or whitefish casting the break water I leave immediately and get it on ice until I get to the cabin. It gets filleted and fried jolly on the spot. Some of the best fish ever.

I thought herring and whitefish had vastly different meat. I’ve caught plenty of herring. Never a whitefish.

Just give a heads up when the Earthwood Inn has whitefish Friday.

Herring was Monday’s Earthwood fish of the day. Carole wanted to do the Rustic Inn again so…….

The Herring and Whitefish are very much alike in texture and in taste. I’ve had both at Earthwood.

Growing up in the 70’s and 80′ closer to the shores of Michigan vs. Superior we always had perch before the species crashed. I never had the Herring until just a few years ago from a fish house in Grand Marais. Its every bit as good as those perch frys I remember as a kid. Now its a must stop on our annual trek to Canada. Pike is by far our favorite in Canada. The deep water forage they feed on makes the flesh white, flakey and delicous. Last week in Grand Marais and if you look closely the front one came with cheese curds:

It’s 9:30 Am and I’m ready to jump in the truck for a cruise to the north shore and EAT!

What’s the name of this fish house in Grand Marais?
I’m putting it on my bucket list since I’ve never had herring or whitefish.

Earthwood Inn goes on the list too.
Their menu says Herring(seasonal). What’s the season for Herring? When do they offer it?
I didn’t see Whitefish on the menu. Do you know when that’s available?

That pic BP posted sealed the deal. I see a Road Trip coming soon!

Earthwood serves Herring all summer as there are locals who net them. Can’t miss Earthwood since it lies between the Scenic Route from Duluth to Two Harbors and the Expressway, right at the end of the car dealership lot just before entering Two Harbors. Look for Pierre. Earthwood also serves one mean burger too. Carole and I eat at Earthwood more than any other Two Harbors restaurants. Carmody isn’t bad but not like Earthwood. Earthwood has character.

While you’re up there be sure to stop in at Castle Danger Brewing in downtown Two Harbors. The Danger Cream Ale is super. Actually H’s Gold. stop by on your way home from work and I’ll treat you to one.

I’ll take a rain check if that’s ok Tom?
Will be helping out later at the park in ZF cleaning up the flood mess. Hauling sand out and taking to my nephew who’s building a house. Free sand, can’t beat that and there’s a lot of it!

Ya know I even googled that Danger Cream Ale and it sounds really good.
When I saw Ale I thought of the hoppy Pale Ale stuff which I can’t stand. The young guys seem to like it but none for me. The cream ale sounds like right up my alley!

Now to plan that trip to Two Harbors!

Let me know when you’re headed up. We might be at the cabin. Some eats at Earthwood and some casting on the breakwater? Always a cold Ale.

By the way. we don’t do the hoppy stuff either and the Cream Ale is one very good beer.

Dockside fish market. Anything on the menu with Superior in front of it is fresh….

Thanks BigPike. We wander up to Grand Marias about once a summer, twice maybe. Always looking for a new eat shop. This is on the list now. Again, thanks.
