I know what it is. It’s a cougar. Zoinks! I hope somebody isn’t putting Meow Mix on the back porch for Scruffy the Cat.

Trail cam picture from a friend’s property about 1.5 miles SE from my own farm which is about 8 miles east of Hinckley MN. Enlarged slightly to better show detail, but I saw the original pictures with the date/time stamp 9/10/15.

Nothing like a cougar in the area to give that walk through the pre-dawn darkness to the deer stand that little extra edge.

I have seen tracks in the snow while coyote hunting in this areas that couldn’t be anything other than a cougar, so they do occasionally pass through. I doubt many of them stay long, or at least that’s what I’m hoping.

She’s pretty! BUT I definitely wouldn’t want to see one of them walking into my deer stand. I spooked a porcupine once on my way in… gave me a good startle. I swear it was 6′ tall with huge fangs. shock

If we’re talking one wolf vs. one cougar, I’ve got my money on the cougar.

I think about how many guys hunt in the western states where there is a much higher density of cats, and how many attacks do you hear of? Not many. I’m more afraid of rattlers.

Guy was telling me, in Arizona I believe, he setup a blind in the desert. Unknowingly as sunset came, his blind was setup right on top of a considerable crack in the ground, and out started popping tatarntula after tarantula.

    No thanks, give me cougars.

Yup….. That’s a cat. Not the first caught on cam. Wouldn’t be the first eliminated either. Nor is it a threat to you…..

Thanks, I feel much better now. :coffee I’ll just remind myself in the event of a cougar attack, that it’s a very rare occurrence. mrgreen

In all seriousness, I highly doubt the cougar will stick around. We’ve had them in the area before, but I think overall there is too much human activity for them and they seem to move on after a while.

In other news, there have been several sightings of what some believe is a mountain goat in the area along the Kettle River. I’m trying to get hold of a trail cam picture of this one. I doubt it’s really a mountain goat, my guess would be that if it exists at all, it’s a long-haired domestic goat that has escaped.

    just some facts

Chances of being attacked by a mountain lion = from Answers ” Only 14 people have been killed in North America in the last 100 years by cougar attacks. The odds of you or someone you know getting eaten by a cougar in your lifetime is about the same as winning a multi-million dollar lottery 3 or 4 times in a row on the first ticket.”

From what I found including Canada and US, there are about 5 attacks a year, and it averages to less than 1 per year is fatal.

Now, the odds of a cougar attack in a bar increases exponentially.

Your post got me thinking…Is it ‘legal’ in Mn to shoot one? I went to the DNR website and see that it is NOT legal. Just an FYI to all that may encounter one of the 5 (OK maybe 10 -) ) that are in the state at any given time…

It’s not a hose cat, you dolt. Obviously the tail is too long to be a hose cat.
