Isn’t honeycomb ice mainly due to sunlight that’s amplified bc of its angle later in the ice season? Would it honeycomb bc of standing water?
Don’t want to play down the weather it just seems the ice terrorists have taken over this year in general. There’s a huge slab of ice with 32ish degree water underneath, other than the accesses, should a guy really be concerned?
I’m wondering if honeycomb ice can be the result of several freeze/thaw cycles. If water is allowed to soak into the cracks a freeze cycle will cause that water to expand creating more stress resulting in more cracks? Warmer weather will also create softer ice. I do believe a higher sun angle will have more of an affect on ice deterioration.

crappieguyPosts: 163February 17, 2017 at 2:34 pm #1674887Mm 714, the ice I drilled through today looked like shaved ice, not a good sign, although I didn’t measure it there had to be close to 16″ of it and that was just where I was fishing not to mention the route to get there.
What region Outdraft?

Thad SmithPosts: 2February 20, 2017 at 8:15 pm #1675586Headed to Mille Lacs on Wednesday the 22nd. Coming in from Ohio. Never been to Mille Lacs. Bringing a four wheeler. With all the rain today, will it be possible for us to get on the ice anywhere. Staying at Red Door. I saw tonight they closed their lake access. Any input would be appreciated.
Austin RootPosts: 33February 21, 2017 at 9:11 am #1675702I was on ice last night after the rain in the Mankato MN area. The ice was a foot thick but questionable at best. maybe 5 inches of the foot was decent ice. Starting to pull away from the shoreline. I will try to fish this weekend but extreme caution is advised.
February 21, 2017 at 9:48 am #1675719I was on Osakis in a friends Ice Castle this past Saturday. We were in the bay out of Head of the Lakes Resort. We enjoyed a solid 20 inches of ice, and decent Crappie bite and a good bbq.
I’m glad you had good fishing! The ice is still in great shape even after the rain yesterday. I drove out last night on a couple smaller lakes and the ice looked very good. Solid 20″-24″. I plan on spending the weekend in the sleeper house.
If anyone wants to get their sleeper house out come on up to Alexandria!

It was my first trip that way in years. I forgot what a easy drive it is!

Well I don’t want to be the one to tell you not to come…so I won’t. Almost all (if not all) resorts have closed their access and roads now. Not sure, there may be a few that are still allowing ATV’s out but then your kind of on your own once you’re out there. Not sure if your plans include staying through the weekend, but some places are still holding hope that conditions might improve enough to allow some limited access. There are a some events that have been planned for this weekend (Perch Extravaganza is one) that would be expected to draw large crowds.
Very disappointing for many of us how quickly things fell apart this year.CharlesPosts: 1944February 21, 2017 at 11:04 am #1675747I think Red Door is shooting for Thursday or Friday for re-opening.

Ok I’ll be the one to tell you that there is nothing to worry about. If you have an ATV getting on the ice will not be a problem. The only thing you need to be aware of is the main breaker that runs most of the way around the lake. The temps will be below freezing at night all week. Then by Friday below freezing all weekend. Most of the water will be gone if it’s not already gone. I’m confident some people will be driving vehicles this weekend, so an ATV or snowmobile will be no issue.
I’d recommend calling around later in the week to find the best place to go on. I’d recommend Rocky Reef. The breaker is right on shore there so crossing it won’t be such an issue when you’re only in 18″ of water. The West side should be good too. Possibly Terry’s? Use your head and you will be just fine. Have fun!
