Things are getting dicey out in SD

I just received this from Marcus Quam. Apparently a friend of his went through in a snobear on Dry 2, everyone got out OK, and ATVs and SxS have been going through on other lakes as well. If you’re headed west this weekend…be careful. This warm weather has not been good to the ice conditions.

That is going to be an expensive loss. Those Snobears aren’t cheap.

Last night you could hear the water sucking down through the ice. It’s deteriorating quickly.

Judging by the color of the ice and the thickness of the chunks it doesn’t look good.

I thought snowbears were supposed to float

I am pretty sure that is how they float. Other pictures I have seen where they went through the ice that is what they look like.

They do float, just like that. That is why they have the skylight escape hatch.

Looks like only about 4-6 inches of ice

What kind of temps caused this rapid decline? Assuming above freezing for weeks…maybe some rain by the looks of the ice?

We had rain the other day, so guessing that is what caused the issue up north as well.

Sounds like warm temps next week too, so probably not going to get any better in the short term.

I’m told that snobear went through 11″. It doesn’t look that thick in the pic but that’s what I’ve been told from guys that should know.

That ice does not look 11 inches thick to me but pictures are hard to tell.

I said the same thing to the guys that sent me the pics. I guess in the end it doesn’t matter much.

Ice is so spotty around ne sd this year i wouldn’t venture far without checking or knowing 1st hand. Number of places have opened back up in the last week alot of ridges collapsed a week or so ago when we had 40 and 50 degree weather and if you didn’t know where they were its quite treacherous. Dive rescue was called out again tonight. Also lots of slush starting to form and this week also doesn’t look very forgiving either.

Souix Falls weather looks like high 30’s to 50 degree highs for the next 9 days. Yikes!

Hearing a few atvs/utvs and a pickup going through in this area today. Supposedly couple people taken to hospital.

I just got off the phone with Marcus and he says conditions from one lake to the next are all over the place. One lake is in a relatively good condition and the next one right down the road is in horrible shape with no clear reason why. For the next week or so anybody out in that part of the country is going to want to be very cautious.
