So many lakes, so little time. Of all the lakes and rivers here in the upper Midwest, which body of water/species/tactic are you most looking forward to this open-water season, and why?

I want to explore a couple areas very very far north on the Mississippi. Get away from the fishing pressure and explore new stretches of river where you could catch any of 3-4 different species on any given cast.

My goal for this summer is to head out to local, unmapped non-motorized lakes with a canoe and trolling motor and identify structure and contours to better target fish once the lakes lock up next winter. In the last couple of years, I have really gotten into canoe/kayak fishing on smaller bodies of water/rivers.

Don’t get me wrong, boat fishing is great. Sometimes it’s the simplicity of wading in a creek or paddling a small lake that is more enjoyable…

I’m not going to look much further than the Croix sippi this year but I do want to make a quick trip to bago at some point.

Hard to beat the fishing on the Croix sippi

After spending the last 2 years focusing on big waters in MN, I’m going to try and hit some of the little gems in the Park Rapids/Walker area.

Body of water: Pokegama Grand Rapids
    Species: Bass (large or small)
    Tactic: Topwater

Why? My bass club is having it’s third tournament on the lake since I joined the club. It’s a fantastic and sprawling fishery with just about everything a bass fisherman such as myself could want.

My annual trip to Nipigon always tops my blood pumping meter. This year my nephew and daughter will join me! Targeted species are pike, lakers, walleye, and specs. Locally I will continue to learn Solberg Lake, Cranberry, and Turtle Flambeau. My second full year living on Solberg I hope to expand my knowledge of the lake and stick a big walleye this spring. Last but not least I would like to hit Chequamegon Bay for any and all species that swim in those waters.

I love the good ol’ Mississippi in May/June when everything seems to be biting and the weather is so good.

I always look forward to green bay. Like all lakes some years have been incredible, others tough. The one constant is quality fish. In all the years I have gone out there, we have only caught one walleye under the 15″ slot.

The Croix or Mississippi and then some. To hit them more often than last year and to catch and release at least one 28+ from any one of them.

Pool 4 is where I will spend most of my time. However my favorite place to spend time is leech lake. Spend a week up there in fall every year but I am hoping to spend a 2nd week up there this year.
