-18 here right now
Just checked the chickens, they’re alive but pissed about their frozen water. Gave them some new water and added a caged heat lamp.
Their two 200-watt infrared wall heaters that apparently don’t cut the mustard in the extreme cold. But when they’re on the roost the heaters don’t have much to reflect onto.
Our chickens were out bright and early this morning. No heat lamps though. A little extra bedding and plenty of ventilation with no water in the coop for frostbite is key. They’re far tougher than any human when it comes to cold.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23275December 12, 2024 at 8:08 am #2304431My garage fridge stops running as temps get this low. I figured out LONG ago that simply putting a small shop light in there by the thermostat it will keep the fridge running so nothing will ever freeze. What would happen is the fridge would freeze and the freezer would thaw which was odd LOL. My bulb just burned out the other day and good luck finding a non-LED bulb these days! I went to the hardware store and found 3 different bulbs, 1 was an appliance bulb which wouldnt work in this scenario, the other two were a 40w and 75w. Im using the 75 watt now and so far so good. Before I put the bulb in there the temp in my fridge was 20 degrees, but very little had actually frozen. Now its right at 30 degrees. I just hope the bulb lasts all season since they are hard to come by. The guy at the hardware store didnt know if they even had any non LED ones.
December 12, 2024 at 8:08 am #2304432We are at -17 right now. Making some good ice at this rate. Almost wish it would last longer then 3 days to make driving on the ice with the truck come a little sooner, but then come the crowds as well.
Where I am they are saying rain/snow mix on Sat morning and near 40 by Sunday. Wild swings in temperature.

No water in the coop? You have to give them water right?
StanleyPosts: 1098December 12, 2024 at 10:11 am #2304474Captain, try a rough service bulb for old school trouble lights for the fridge. You can get them in 100w non LED.
December 15, 2024 at 7:22 am #2304989Good grief, 4-5 days ago here in itasca cty it was -17 to -20, now it’s 28 and a light mist. And there saying rain is possible tonight
Jimmy JonesPosts: 2890December 15, 2024 at 8:25 am #2304994Traffic is moving slow in town this morning and the sidewalks/driveways are shiny ice. Time to break out the ice melt I guess. I think I have about 1/8 of glass on everything. 33 degrees though. Light fog too.
James AlmquistPosts: 374December 15, 2024 at 8:40 am #2304997It looks like we are going to chill down starting Tuesday night and hit single digits at night for the rest of the week. Not much snow so the ice making will continue.

I will try and find them, but I think the one I found is exactly that. Trouble is its 75w which is a little big. Now that it warmed up I had to turn it off for a while because it was 50 degrees in there LOL. Its back on now because it was down to 20 this morning.
Jimmy JonesPosts: 2890December 15, 2024 at 9:17 am #2305001I’m finding the temps from the last couple days perfect for keeping a few beers cold just by setting them in the garage for a couple hours. And my bourbon stash in the shop is great 40 degrees. Had me a couple fingers last night and it was like a frosty mug sensation.
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23275December 15, 2024 at 10:27 am #2305006It was like 24 degrees here yesterday and drizzling. Obviously a lot of warm air aloft.
December 15, 2024 at 10:57 am #2305007Definitely melting and dripping here by me today. Got minimal snow and sleet accumulation yesterday at times.
More warming tomorrow and then a drop back to more seasonable/average temps the rest of the week.
Still no big snow makers in the forecast here either.
December 16, 2024 at 7:37 am #2305090Weather terrorists are trying to hype up a mild-looking clipper on Thursday coming in from the northwest. “Measureable” snow is the word I’m seeing tossed around somewhere right in the middle of the state. Stay tuned
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23275December 16, 2024 at 7:39 am #2305091Measurable doesnt really mean much. Now when they start saying plowable or traffic impacted or alter travel plans then we are getting warmer LOL

Generally speaking, we don’t get a lot of snow from northwest clippers because its colder air and there just isn’t the right combination of air mass over head to accumulate much. So I’m skeptical of anything more than a couple inches at the most. But hey, given that the landscape is mostly brown, maybe an inch or two could mean a white Christmas!
Our big snowmakers pull up warmer, moist air from the gulf.
December 16, 2024 at 7:52 am #2305096Slow weather times for the Facebook wanabee meterologists, News Outlets, etc. so I’d expect them to pump up everyone on the next handful of systems that have any shot at snowflakes in them.
We’re right back to 0″ of frost here in SE MN. I could dig a hole with no frost or snow to deal with for yet another Christmas here. Things sure are different than when I was younger as December has become a pretty mild month (absent a few random cold shots)
CaptainMuskyPosts: 23275December 16, 2024 at 8:06 am #2305099Just saw novak weather said potential “Big Snow Maker” for Thursday LOL.

Trucks and ice castles out on the lakes here in west-ish MN. My mom’s birthday is December 19 and that’s been roughly the median date for seeing trucks on ice my entire life. This year we’re 4 days ahead of the median.
December 16, 2024 at 2:23 pm #2305217Still trying to get out for first ice, but Mother Nature had other ideas. A little bit of soup.

December 16, 2024 at 2:42 pm #2305221Whatever snow falls this week is going to melt pretty soon again. The forecast for the week of Christmas looks very warm.

December 16, 2024 at 2:54 pm #2305223I’m showing a forecasted high of 42 degrees…15 degrees above normal for December 25th.
My 4 year old has punted on wanting to go sledding for the most part and now said she wants a Brown Christmas so she can keep dirtbiking.
Justin riegelPosts: 948December 16, 2024 at 2:54 pm #2305224Also on a plus side the days start getting longer again next Sunday.

He’s awesome for weather information and explains things real well. You just have to keep in-mind that his revenue is based on viewers and sponsorships.
I usually look at his snowfall predictions and tone them down a notch. As for the “where” and “when” he’s pretty spot on…just pushes the extremes a bit with his graphics and predictions to generate views.

Spot on. I’m a bit of a weather geek and I also chased thunderstorms for the last 15 years up until the end of this season when I decided to hang it up. If every storm wasn’t riding the hype train there would be no views/likes. Same goes for the likes of Reed Timmer et al.
December 16, 2024 at 3:27 pm #2305238I am very glad I don’t have a permanent ice house to deal with anymore. I don’t miss the stress related to winters like this and/or January thaws that’s for sure.
