The weather thread

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve seen some nice rains and maybe a couple inches combined from all of it. But when I go dig a couple shovel-fulls of carrots, at about 5″ I hit dry soil. And no the soil is not frozen. We’re still hurting for soil moisture here in the SE.

Gim lives in the Cities suburbs and I live in Rochester. Backyard observations will differ even during a large system. Gim gets this data from reliable sources and does a pretty decent job of keeping us up to date on all sorts of weather-related conditions and he certainly does not deserve to be called crap names if what he offers doesn’t give with what someone sees in their back yard.

This is one of my favorite threads here. Keep up the good work Gim.

Yeah that drought monitor from the state isnt a “how much rain did we get in the last week” type of deal they actually take measurements of moisture in the soil I am sure. They likely have people all across the state who do this just like weather observers do for rain/snow, etc.

That was a really thoughtful comment. I appreciate it.

Well it looks like fall will be over here in a few days and we’ll be moving on to winter.

Fall lasted about a month here. Less than a month ago, it was still 75 degrees out and I was fishing in shorts. September and October were way more like summer than fall.

Fall is probably my favorite season and it seems to be gradually just disappearing like winter. bawling

Just my luck. Next weekend for the opener of muzzleloader season the forecast is rather cold. Good thing there is 3 weekends of it and we normally only hunt a short time in the mornings and evenings. On the plus side the colder weather should have the deer on the move feeding more.

My “dock guy” was supposed to pull my dock more than a month ago. As of yesterday it was not done. Tic tock. I’m in a bind if it’s not done this weekend.

This summer we camped at the Deer lake campground on Cutfoot. I was surprised at how much it has changed in the area. I am on the list at Little Winnie Resort and Campground but it may take a few years to get in. I love the area and all that it has to offer.

That’s prime hunting. It’s not MN shotgun opener where it’s 55-60 degrees. You can take a deer and don’t have to race to deal with cutting it up. There’s often a little snow and the leaves that are on the ground are snow covered making everything quiet and relaxing.

The wind has been relentless. If we’re calm everything would be locked up by now. -5 here now.

Some areas to the south and east of the Great Lakes are experiencing a massive lake effect snow event. There are reports of regions with 2-3 feet of snow already. Many of the Great Lakes are still well above normal water temperature for this time of year which is only increasing the snow fall rate as cold air above the water collides with warm warmer surface air.

There is supposed to be a football game in Orchard Park on Sunday night too. That could be interesting.

Sat. morning for the muzzleloader opener the morning temp was a feels like of -20. Needless to say this old lazy hunter skipped the morning hunt and went back to a warm bed. My hunting buddy had no problem with that call either. By the evening it was up to a a warm feels like of only -8. Its been awhile since I’ve hunted in those temps. Good thing the evening hunt was only for about 2.5 hours. That’s about all my old body could take. Getting soft in my old age. Sunday with the evening hunt around 14 felt like a heat wave. Temps looking much better for next weekend. Will probably hit it a little harder next weekend.

Looks like a fairly significant warm up this weekend for a couple days. I am seeing 40 on Saturday and near 50 on Sunday in southern MN. Possible rain or rain/snow mix Sunday night into Monday.

Next week looks closer to average again though. No significant snow makers in the 10 day forecast, for now.

With 3 weeks to go to Christmas, I think SE MN has a pretty good shot at a “brown” Christmas. There’s not much for major weather systems on the 10 day, and the general temp trend through the next 14 days is at or above normal after tomorrow.

For places up North with good ice, if the wind doesn’t mess things up the lack of snowfall should set them up well for the rest of the season.

I’m looking forward to those warmer temps for the 2nd weekend of Muzzleloader season. My area is showing a high of Mid 30’s for both Sat. and Sun. with lows of mid to upper 20’s. The only bad thing is the warmer temps will not have the deer moving and feeding as much as last weekend. Guess you can’t have it both ways. Most likely not going to hunt the 3rd weekend so going to hit it hard one last time this weekend.

Ha. I was actually thinking about that given how bitter cold it was last weekend for the muzzy opener. Might be a little more comfortable for ya this weekend instead.

Can you order up a fresh 1-2″ of snow? I’d like to put one more deer down w/ the bow, so I can get my ice fishing stuff dusted off.
