I know Downtown Mankato has a pretty big levee but all that water at once might even overcome that capacity if she broke away. Anything remotely close to the normal floodplain of the Blue Earth river beyond the damn would be toast.

Looks like a system will arrive Thursday and into Friday. Rain totals look like 1/2 inch or less but obviously any more rain into these swollen rivers and saturated ground is not good.

Looking further out, there is no hot or super humid weather on the horizon. Still have not eclipsed the 90 degree mark either. 4th of July week weather is looking pretty nice.

It’s such a crap shoot a week or more out. Some models show rain chances next Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday for the week of the 4th

Oh I know its a crap shoot, especially when it comes to rain/snow. At least the heat dome is staying to the south though. Seems like the 4th of July has brought some pretty hot weather in recent years. I’d much rather have 75 or 80 degrees than the dreaded heat dome.

I recently read that offials think the shoreline will erode far enough to take out the store as well, which is further back.

I wonder what they’re eventually going to do about the Rapidan Dam once they can get at it. From some of the photos and video I have recently seen, there is almost no water flowing through the actual dam portion anymore. All the water is going around the side now and continuing to eat away at the shoreline. Diverting that water is going to be a nightmare.

Just destroy and remove the whole thing? Can’t imagine they would consider repairing it given the damage that’s occured. Back in 2021 it was deemed to be in a very poor state and the Army Core of Engineers advised either repairing or removing it. Neither was done because of the cost.

The lack of flow through the gates is because of debris (trees & branches) blocking everything. Thats what started the whole mess.

It was only partially blocking the flow. There was still water going through. Just not enough when the water was super high.

Now there’s none going through from what I saw. So basically there’s a new river channel.

I’d bet dollars to donuts that the water is flowing today where it flowed prior to the building of that dam. Water will always seek is own natural channel to flow in.

Why couldnt they have cleaned that crap out is beyond me. They could have lessoned the threat if they did just that. Bring in a helicopter with a grapple and then pull it out.

Pretty sure they cant cause your screwing with nature or some bs. Used to always wonder why they never did by where I live. They would blow it up or break it up in Blakely then it would get stuck in Belle Plaine they would do it again and it would get stuck in Jordan then Carver.

Who is going to pay for a helicopter to come and grapple logs on a days notice? It is not like those logs had been building up for months. Rushing FLOOD waters pushed them there in a short amount of time. the water level rose so quickly that even if they could have gotten equipment there fast, would the outfits even risk their workers and equipment on a dam that is/was already in disrepair.

I understand we all hate seeing what happened, but sometimes mother nature is just to strong and unpredictable to avoid these terrible occurrences. There was no mis-feasence.

My weather app is showing a 95% chance of thunderstorms on Thursday and an 85% chance on Thursday night for the 4th.

If that forecast holds true, a whole lotta outdoor plans gonna get ruined. I cannot remember a full day/night rain out for the 4th of July in many years. More often than not it’s stinking hot and humid.

The vast majority of flooding issues are caused due to lack of flow due to logjams and other debris. This is what causes the REd to flood so many times. Had they cleared the main channel it likely wouldnt floor nearly as bad or as often.

i havent paid to much attention as to what we are supposed to get for rain tonight or later in the week. sounds like northern Mn got a good bunch today.

i know alot of you guys really dont need rain, but i dug a hole in my garden about 12 inches deep to bury some junk and my ground could use some. besides i got alot of grass seed down too!!!

I mowed from 5:30-9:30 tonight with no other options to get some grass knocked down between rains. One small piece left to finish Wednesday morning before our annual “3rd of July” Party we host.

The tentative plan was to fish the river early Wednesday morning too, but the storms coming through tonight and tomorrow might change those plans

anyone else concerned about the overall increase in insane weather events and patterns? I don’t want to use the “CC” curse word because of people automatically jumping to calling me a woke liberal, but sh*t is drastically changing.

drought after drought… wildfires… historic heat waves… 100 year storm events happening every couple years… record snowfall one year followed by record lack of snowfall the next year… droughts happening almost every year, followed up the next year by record rainfalls and floods. a couple days ago there was a category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic that popped up, a phenomenon that has never been recorded to happen in June ever. The sea levels are rising at unseen rates.

the highs are higher and the lows are lower.. the severe storms are happening way more frequently. call me old but this isn’t how it used to be. its getting so bad the insurance companies are contemplating pulling out of Minnesota all together.

I’m genuinely concerned for what’s in store for us in the next few years and wondering if I’m the only one that has these concerns?

I generally agree with your concern on the climate Gitchi. But just like you, for the sake of not turning a daily weather thread into a politcal argument, I’m going to refrain from offering my opinions on that subject.

I think the weather this spring has been glorious for the most part. Absent some north shore/arrowhead and southern MN flash flooding, its been a nice change from the past several years where we’ve gone almost immediately into a drought with smoke-filled air by June and stayed there all summer. Lakes and rivers are full again, soils have been recharged, and we’ve moved completely out of drought statewide. And we still haven’t recorded a 90+ degree day either.

Isn’t one of the reasons for the current flooding issues the loss of wetlands due to land/housing development?

Yes, that’s probably part of it. Someone also mentioend increased amount of drain tiling on agricultural land. I’m sure that’s also part of it too. Water is designed to run off quickly in many areas now instead of being soaked up by grassland, wetland, and other natural buffers.

Its definitely something Ive been thinking about… However the outlooks pretty grim IF CO2 actually did make an impact. Chinas burning more coal than ever, and meanwhile we are worried about windmills, solar farm,s and peoples pronouns and feelings here.

Ultimately I think Climate has always been changing . How long have the glaciers been melting since the ice age ? Its always been changing . Just how fast . I dont think there is much we can do other than live with it . Windmills and solar farms are pi$$ing on a tire pile fire for all Im concerned.

The insurance threat thing is real. Ive talked to 2 separate agents and they say the Midwest is the new florida for insurance. Not good for consumers.

Seems like the weather around the 4th of July has always been stinking hot and humid so I’m fine with cooler temps and rain for a change. It’ll keep a lot of riff raff off the water.

The latest models have been pushing the bulk of the rain futher south. From about St Cloud and south looks wetter and north of that is looking drier the next few days.

I would need to look deeper into the information for Minnesota to have any real opinion or argument.
Being 46, I have seen years of drought and heat before, I have seen little snow winters, and Wet and snowy years before. So none of this is new, are the extremes more often, I am not sure.
Were i have lived my whole life in Morrison County, I feel heavy to severe storms happen less often now. I am not sure if that is just perception of a kid to an adult?
Plus we seem to get our “news” and information so much quicker from all reaches of the world, that may be affecting our preception of things.
