It was great to see James catching the big pike on my favorite lake in the world. I have never been on the reverse shallow water bite from spring/summer vs. the late summer / fall transition. I noticed the search areas are very similar. I learned some new stuff. Thanks for sharing. Next year will be my 19th year fishing the mighty great Nip.

Good show…..Enjoy catching pike as well. Hard to get anyone to fish them with me around here outside of some late ice tip up fishing. It’s all walleyes here.

x2 The tip on how to use side imaging will go in my bag of tricks. Next season will be my first using SI. Especially in the early season that might eliminate, gee I wonder if there is anything to hold fish in this giant bay.

I just watched it, it is a great show.
My wife, Diana, and I are trying to make it there this spring close to ice out.
We have fished the river, a few years ago, below the lake and caught some very nice Brookies.
We fished Fort Peck Reservoir in Montana and Basswood in MN this past September and caught some nice, up to 38″, pike at Fort Peck and a giant 23″ x 16 1/2″ smallie at Basswood.
We’re also thinking of the Black Bay area of Lake Superior, for pike, since Gord Ellis did an article on that area.
I would attach some photo’s but I can’t figure that out yet.

I was watching a youtube where they were targeting early season brookies on the lake. Tons of casting but ice out thru June was the time to go. A pike/brookie combination trip could be a lot of fun.

One take from it is you are seeing an example of how you can use some of these newer electronics as a tool. The next step would be to apply them to other fishing situations.

catching northern and catching trophy pike are two different things. James was using a tool to find optimal water in a bay that is miles long on a lake 50 × 50 miles. Smart fisherman showing us how to use a tool to eliminate thousands of acres of useless water….

Well said. Have spent better portions trips in June just eliminating useless water in big bays trying to find weeds. If I’m on a trip with limited time, how can I put the pattern together faster and find other areas that match it as efficiently as possible?

I have and still can catch quality fish without the gadgets. One day per weeklong trip is dedicated to small boat, small motor, and no electronics on a smaller lake. Fun to go back to the basics but on big water maps, sonar, and now side imaging can shorten the learning curve.

Once I saw they were catching pike I immediately turned the channel. Pike fishing just doesn’t do much fore me. I’m sure it was a great show like all the rest, but the interest level just wasn’t there for me on this episode.
