Boaters and anglers not welcomed: here is the new proposal for the lake.

A request to add a “quiet water area” for portions of Harrison and West Arm bays from the north Seton Channel to the east end of Deering Island located near Lord Fletcher’s in Spring Park, Minn. The proposed area encompasses about a 2-mile perimeter including homes in Orono, Mound and Spring Park. see Fox 9 News

I see this working like the AIS laws.

If I heard correctly they were talking about imposing a 5 mph speed limit. That’s basically a brisk walk. I’m sure that’s slower than no wake.

Reading the report, not an AIS request. Safety concerns in high traffic areas, creating a no wake zone. Probably an ok request for the high season on Minnetonka.

“As stewards of the lake, the people, we have to do what we believe we should be doing whatever we can to save the lake,” Bickmann said.

LOL! I was going along with the “no wake” zone until that statement!

No wake is “slowest speed while still maintaining control of your vessel, but never to exceed 5 mph”.

It’s not any different then the no wake zones on the neck down areas on the St Croix.

Not being from the area, I have no opinion.

Brian, you can bring the grandkids to Florida where they can use as many lines as they want, can catch and transport their own bait and keep the plug in.

The lake is so large and there is so much money related to boating on that lake I would be surprised at any radical changes. But who knows.

Yes, who knows? The mega-rich lakeshore property owners have been trying for years to limit use of what they love to call “their lake”. The approach has always been death by 1000 cuts, so this would be the latest in that trend. Limit access, limit parking, limit speed, limit marina size, limit, limit, limit.

Keep in mind this proposal will only be in effect for those who do not live on the lake. The day a Minnetonka homeowner ever receives and pays for a boating ticket will be the same days that I see pigs fly out of my behind. I can not tell you the # of times I have saw tickets being given to a fisherman for some petty boating violation ( and no I’ve never received one ) The best was last summer when I saw several times in one day fishing boats being pulled over and ticketed for the No Wake zone within so far from shore and while they were ticketing the fisherman there were HUGE pleasure boats went blasting by more than 1/2 the distance from shore as the fisherman was when pulled over. That is life on lake Minnetonka

I assume this ordinance wouldn’t prohibit about three dozen guys from running their iceaugers along this two mile perimeter from 3AM to 4AM on a Saturday morning?

You guys can drill all you want, let’s remember half the residents go to one of their other several houses they own for the winter.

I don’t like tourists! That includes snowbirds and shell pickers. )

So as much as I talk up being here, I saw a funny quote in a forum the other day. Someone was talking about Lake Mary where I live’s motto which is “City of Lakes”. Someone said sure, city of lakes and all of them private.

So we do deal with similar things. Of course I am talking about small ponds, but most are surrounded by house or part of an HOA. Not sure how the laws are, but take the pond by my house. A public trail goes by it on one part and I assume butts up to the lake, yet there are still signs there saying no fishing unless you are part of the HOA.

So my whole dream of just picking a pond and fishing it is not really a reality. coffee

All, this is from Jay Green who is an avid bass pro, board member of the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District and member of Anglers for Habitat. This is his take on it: Three residents (not an HOA) submitted a petition to the LMCD back in August to establish this quiet water area based on their concerns over their shoreline issues and their perception of a public safety problem. Like any government agency (we are not the lake association, that’s the LMA), there is a documented process to handle these requests. In my opinion, its really no different than if someone petitioned your city or county to change the speed limit in your neighborhood. This petition was discussed by the our public safety committee back in September, and after talking with the applicants, the water patrol and Hennepin County, their recommendation was to only consider this IF there is a legitimate public safety issue. They also recommended though that we go through the public hearing process so everything is above board, out in the open, so the public can participate in the process. A decision I wholeheartedly support. So I encourage anyone to attend (and speak) at the hearing. This is how the system works. As the LMCD representative for the City of Mound, I have talked to a lot of people about this over the past few weeks. Some supportive, some not so much. Personally, there has to be a pretty compelling reason to implement ANY quiet waters area. If you have questions, please ask.

Probably wouldn’t have shoreline issues if they returned it to a natural shoreline.

Win-win for the lake. Public waters remain public and the lake and homeowner benefit.

Boss took me to a lake he hasn’t been to for a few years. I fished it before already, but he knew a spot where he has had lots of luck. When we got there it was gated up. FML

With this current proposal to significantly increase the “NO WAKE ZONE” North of Seton Lake, extending from the point on the East end of Harrison Bay Eastward to the East & North points of Deering Island.

Estimates range from an additional 5-10 minutes to travel at “No Wake” from Harrison Bay into West Arm.

Decide for yourself if you’re for or against this and then attend the LMCD meeting “Public Hearing” Wednesday Nov. 12th at 7pm at Wayzata City Hall.

For complete information, see these links and voice your opinion.

Yes, lots to read, but your opinions do matter. I’ll be submitting my opinion to the LMCD as I have a Parks Commission meeting previously scheduled.
