Having withdrawls not doing tournaments this year so I hit Chisago this morning and tried to get a nice 5 fish bag. Didn’t get it. jester Just over 11 lbs. Caught plenty of fish just no good ones. Lots on the neko, a couple nice ones on docks. But A LOT of 1-1.5 lb bass. Still waiting for those big girls to reach the outside weed edge.

I was out this morning skipping docks for a few hours myself. Lots of fun, caught 18 largies, mostly 14-17.5 inches but did get one at the end that was 18 inches. Weightless Senko in bright colors was working.

As much as I’ve fallen in love with the neko, I will skip docks over anything every day of the week. My favorite way to fish.

I used to do more of it. The lakes I often fish now don’t have much of a dock bite so I don’t do as much. Its obvious to me which docks likely have bass under them and which ones don’t. The ones that provide a lot of shade in proximity to deeper water are magnets for bigger bass too. Here’s the last one I got yesterday.

Chisago has been producing great for me this year. But I fish that water more then any where. I have been finding the big girls all over. Shallow to 15 ft.

Interesting. It’s only the second time I’ve been out there this year but we crushed it on opener shallow, but yesterday I only got a couple bites on docks and couldn’t get anything on shallow wood. Weedline bite from 10-15 ft was good but a ton of 1-2 lbers. Didn’t hit the south end at all though. Only had a few hours. Good to hear they’re still biting!

So when did Neko tail off last year (and don’t ask me to reread those ’19 posts)
By August isn’t a creature, punch, froggie or something else a better bet?

Once the bass start moving up into the weed flats to feed after it starts cooling off is when I switch to a walking topwater, crank, chatterbait, or something more aggressive than the neko.

Also I tried to use the Macho Neko I mentioned earlier in this thread, however if you use the wacky O-rings they do not fit around them. bawling

Was just talking to a friend about this last week… I looked at the date stamped pictures in my phone and last year the Neko bite for me started on June 22 and basically started shutting off July 31. I still got a few into August, but you’re right, other things started working better then. It was a great 6 week Neko bite last year, caught some of the best fish of the year during that stretch.

Here’s an up to date video on the neko from last week. How I rig it, where I throw it, what gear I’m throwing it on (very impressed by the Shimano SLX spinning rod BTW, super sensitive for a $100 rod) and how I like to work it.

It’s basically a weighted wacky rig, that is a good way to describe it.

Yes. BUT…..it falls with a much different action which is the whole key to the neko. The wacky falls horizontally (obviously) and kind of quivers, while the neko is more vertical and slowly spins as it falls. it also stands up on the bottom which a wacky doesnt.

Are you using the 5 inch Senko or something bigger?

Nice video Pete, looks like you stuck some good fish… I think you and Ike are the only two people I know that rig the Neko with the hook point down. Can’t argue with either of your successes, and it sounds like you get a good hook up percentage… wondering if you also find it weedless enough rigged that way? That VMC Neko hook is a good one waytogo

Looks like you use great equipment, only other comment I’d make is the line. I agree about half the bites happen on the way down on slack line. I started out with high biz braid but middle of last year switched to Berkley Vanish “Transition” fluorocarbon. It has color above the surface but turns clear for invisibility below. I did find that I could feel bites on slack fluorocarbon line a little better than braid. I use an extra fast rod so having a line with a little stretch seems to keep them buttoned well too.

I hope to get out and Neko tomorrow, may report back if I get time.

That’s the standard Yum Dinger 5 inch. Sometimes I use Daiwa Fat Nekos which have a little more shape to them but I seem to do the best with the regular old dingers.

Yeah I get a lot of people telling me I have the hook pointing the wrong way, and to be honest it’s just what looked right to me when I first started using the neko. Never knew there was a right way, but I rarely lose a fish so I’ve never noticed a difference.

As for being weedless I’ve honestly never thought about the hook pointing down making it more weedless but maybe it does because I don’t pick up a lot of weeds even when I do cast into the weed edge. I never get hung and usually my normal jigging gets it loose again.

I’m impressed with anyone that can use straight fluoro on spinning gear. I just can’t seem to manage it without getting knots or having it fly off my reel when I open the bail. I’ve gotten it figured out on casting gear but not the spinning.

    I am too, that’s why I use a baitcaster ~

Now that’s interesting! When my motor is fixed I’m planning on throwing big worms on shakey heads and on the neko and I plan to use larger and heavier weights and hooks and thought about bumping up to casting gear. I’m talking 8-10 inch worms. Been reading and watching a lot of cool stuff about it and how right now is the time to throw them.

But a regular neko on casting gear? I don’t know if I could get comfortable with that. I think I like the neko so much because it’s the only finesse technique I can actually tolerate fishing, so I’d be back to being a one dimensional power fisherman if I throw it on casting gear!

Anyone played around with the nail weights with skirts? Just realized I had some and was trying to figure out if I think they would be of any benifit. Theoretically they would make a larger profile I guess….

Funny thing I bought a bunch last year, had some success early on but then it seemed overall I got more bites without the skirt. I realized the other day when I re-rigged my Neko rod that I was out of nail weights… except the skirted ones. So I put one in and trimmed off the skirt if that tells you anything grin
