The King went down

For the last couple years I’ve been trying to put my brother and his middle son in spots where they should have a good chance at getting a deer (so pretty much where I would have sat) without success. Got close last year as my brother missed a nice one, but I was starting to question my ability at reading the property for the WI rifle season. The pressure of neighboring properties makes it a different animal than during the archery season which does make it a bit trickier. Well today the #1 buck on my list hit the ground, but not by my hand. Aside from my own son once he is old enough this was no question the most proud I have felt about a deer I did not shoot. I had my nephew set up on what I knew was a well used escape route that deer use once they get pressured from properties to the southeast (also a natural travel corridor but not as heavily used except when they get pressured) and that is what happened this afternoon. He made a great shot and the deer only went about 40 yards. I didnt do a full measurement as I needed to get home for work tomorow but I fully suspect it will break the 140″ mark. Not bad for his FIRST deer.

Great buck, but you may have set the bar a little too high for such a young hunter! Going to be tough to top! rotflol

Great looking buck. I don’t think there will be a problem with that deer breaking 140. Way to help put the young man on a Great 1st deer ( or a great any deer for that matter )

This year hunting wise seemed like a year of things just meant to be. Yesterday morning a had a group of does/fawns being harassed by two small bucks right behind me. They all walked right behind my stand at about 15 yards, with two bucks down already I had no interest in the does or either buck (both 1 year olds, a 4 amd 6 point). They headed off in the direction of where my nephew was and I just sat patiently waiting for the report of a rifle shot. As it turned out the does/fawns passed him at about 10 yards away, one of the bucks wandered off and the remaining 4 point buck was a little farther out at about 20 yards. He hesitated when he had an opening and the deer moved out of the opening and never gave him another shot. He was a little bummed at lunch that he didnt take that shot. . . well things worked out a little better that afternoon.

Yeah he has a tough mark to beat, I’ve been hunting this property for 25 years and solely targeting the bigger bucks for the last 15 years and I still have yet to take one as large as this deer gun or bow. Pretty sure he is hooked now though, hes toughed it out for several years and I’ve never heard him complain once.

Measured the rack this weekend. 144″ on the nose. Biggest we’ve taken on our property by 6″.
