It get tough sometimes… trying to ignore the political posts, the negativity, the complainers, and the drama of social media, the media, hell even animal cracker boxes making a stink with some people. But I tell you what – nature takes it all away. It really does. And it’s important to remember to get out there. Even if you’re just going for a hike, trimming trails, or (my personal favorite) looking for bugs and frogs. Nature heals the soul and we all need that from time to time. Especially in today’s world.

September 5, 2018 at 4:11 pm #1795654Very well stated Sharon. When I need a break or a pick me upper I go outside, work in the yard, sit on the deck, or go for a long walk.
When I get back I feel refreshed.September 5, 2018 at 4:45 pm #1795659Thank you for a positive post! Getting off grid this weekend to follow your advice.
September 5, 2018 at 8:32 pm #1795695What I think is sad today is how the majority of people never, ever disconnect anymore. Before cell phones and internet, people would be totally disconnected from the world while on vacation. This is also when people would take 1-2 or more week vacations. Today, few of us are ever disconnected even for part of a day. I feel bad that younger generations will never experience that feeling of being cutoff from the world. Just you and nature.

LOL you got me there! I love nature when it’s not 95 and humid as the freaking Amazon out there. It’s gorgeous out tonight. I opened up the windows and baked a cinnamon crumb cake to get into the fall spirit!

Sorry, I had to. Kudos to you and anyone else who can put the BS aside that consumes most by enjoying the outdoors. Nature is the best vice.
September 5, 2018 at 11:01 pm #1795732Sharon you are so right! Thank you for this post. My workplace is a mess, bills, etc.. I need a break and you just reminded me what it is. Thank you very much for this. Call it divine intervention, this could not have come at a better time!
September 6, 2018 at 8:17 am #1795776A little over a week ago I get a text from my sister. “What is your favorite color?”.
A question I’m sure stemmed from her kids which were at the time making me birthday card pictures… Anyway I was out hunting in/near the Badlands.
So I read her text, turned around and snapped a picture.I replied, “my favorite color is nature, here’s my view”.
My sis replies… “In the middle of nowhere again I see :)”
You are truly blessed if you can enjoy a day outside!!!

September 6, 2018 at 8:55 am #1795802Looks fun and you’re 100% correct. I can’t wait for next weekend to finally come and the hunting season to take off in full force.

LOL too late! I like to share what makes me happy, so my photos are all over IDO, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. I tried Twitter but just haven’t gotten in the habit of using that one.
September 6, 2018 at 10:13 am #1795827Damn cold. Only 46 when i left the dock at 9.
Steam rising off the river.

Circled back to comment on this, or take it a bit further.
Curious though that it took the only (posting) female member of this forum to make this post. And very well proposed Sharon. So much to learn from just what you are saying.
Back to a sense of place.
And taking it a bit further, for so many who say that just getting out fishing brings them to the place and peace of being “out there” and away from all the daily static.
And after reading this post I realized how even that can become lost. Being out fishing Mille Lacs the last couple weekends where catching presumably would be automatic, it wasn’t for me. More and more I focused or became more obsessed with catching something…anything that I completely lost the simple joy of just being out there and taking in the beauty of the natural surroundings.
I know better, sometimes in my past I just threw out a line with a bobber and worried less about that and catching a fish than just soaking up the beauty, peace, wonder, and therapy of just being in a personal utopia.
September 8, 2018 at 8:05 pm #1796268Andy, the only thing I worry about catching in a boat is a nap.
I guess occasionally I try to catch a good photo…..there were 3 Eagles playing but i’ll be dang if I could get more then 2 in the frame.

You have then found it. I’ve been there before, just need to find it again.
Catching fish is way overrated.September 8, 2018 at 10:21 pm #1796326Nature, has its ways of power and tranquillity and the nuances of familiarity and the wanting of what is just around the corner to discover.
Iowaboy1Posts: 3845September 8, 2018 at 10:49 pm #1796333Mn sunsets take my breath away,I have many pictures of them saved back as they are my stress reliever provided by nature.
recently a good friend here on IDO sent me a picture of one from his dock for which I am extremely grateful for.
you folks who live up north are a very lucky to have them at your disposal anytime you want to see one when there is no cloud cover, count your blessings.I excelled in writing class way back in high school, whether you choose to believe it or not this old farm kid can write poetry when my soul is stirred like it is at the sight of one your sunsets.
it is not perfect poetry, nor has it made me any money but I have shared my soul speak with the donor of the said sunset as well as a couple of others here.
I was humbled that they thought enough of it to print it off and hang it in their cabins or home.
so,with that, here ya go Sharon,my ode to a Mn sunset.
oh,dont think I have lost my mind, quite frankly that happened years ago and I am very aware of that fact ha ha.born of waters myself I treasure the sight,
of the sun setting on it and the majesty of its might,
I look back upon this day to think,
how is it I am so blessed to have this right?I wonder if I did enough today to earn this blessing,
and why I worry so,
when at the end of the day,
there was nothing that was really that pressing,I wonder too, when will my creator call my name,
to take me to a place,
that compared to here isnt the same,
I am sure it is better there,
but then, who next will sit in my chair?will they love the sunset so,
enough to strive hard to earn the chance,
and as I did, upon the waters,
watch the sun do its daily dance,my MN sunset I love you much,
I would climb over the hill to watch you,
even if my walk was aided by the crutch, once again,I watch you set,
I bid you thank you as I tip a glass your way
with you guarding my day,
I know not to fret, tomorrow is not yet,
yesterday will be a memory,
and I bid you farewell,
until the next time when we both will set
I in my chair and you in your sky.September 9, 2018 at 8:03 am #1796374That is awesome, iowaboy! That’s one of the benefits of being on a lake vs. hiding in the woods, as I tend to favor – those spectacular MN sunsets! They really are something special. Thanks for sharing your poem. I love to write as well and while I do write some poetry, I mostly keep a journal and write in my blog from time to time.

Great thread Sharon. Sometimes its the simple things that can work like a balm to make things seem better. I look forward each year to my “week in the woods”, aka deer season. Its my mind medicine and not at all about killing a deer. I look forward to sunrises on Lake Superior while casting from the breakwater in Two Harbors….just being there puts things in perspective.
Thanks to both of you for the reminders!
September 9, 2018 at 9:18 am #1796394Here’s one my grandson taking a picture of the sunset.
