Two days ago this stuff wasn’t even breaking ground. Today three of these were over 14″. Guess its time to find a steak in the freezer and fire up the grill. I love asparagus grilled over charcoal.

I’ll need to start watching ditch sides now. Good thing is I’m on the right side of the driver seat to look for it. grin

Az-peerie-grass like sandy soil, right? ???

If so, what are the optimal soil and light conditions for it? Mother in law had a patch in front of, on the South side of the old garage/barn intown where we grew up.

Do you plant seed, starts, or just slap your hands across your arms and bling your pretty Barbara Eden eyes? peace

I checked the other bed today and there’s all sorts of it coming along now there. Tis the season to pig out on this wonderful veggie.

HA!! Denny is telling sea stories again and I have proof!!
he caught two enormous bullheads near Canada of all places!! I was there!!
check out this picture of one of them.

And if that wasnt bad enough he caught this stupid dogfish, fought it like hell for a while but it was good enough to win the tourney that week as it was the only fish brought in.

sigh,I have to be truthful though,he has me beat all to heck, you see, when I was only a month old,my mom entered me into Iowas most beautiful baby contest.
I came in in second place, sigh,I was the only one there.

Alright Denny, can let you in on a couple tricks for growing great asparagus. You asked about types of soil and light. Up here we use dirt soil, it is far superior to say concrete or plastic soil. Then for light seems the best is sunlight as it doesn’t do well in the moonlight. Anything else I can help with just holler!

Denny…asparagus is not soil fussy except for clay. It likes sun but grows very well in areas of partial sun thru the day. In the wild it can be found in all sorts of less than good growing conditions so….

Plant the bare roots you can but at about any garden center right about now at about 12″ deep. Keep the planting area damp until the plants begin to poke thru. Asparagus needs at least three years of growth before you’ll get any eating sized spears, so allowing the fine frilly stuff that comes the first year or two to grow is good. Maybe the second year just clip the thin stalks a few times to promote some better, bigger growth.

Asparagus will develop seeds that turn a bright red in the fall. Leave these in the ferns until first frost, then pick them and use a pencil to poke holes randomly, dropping a seed into each hole. Make the holes about 2″ deep. The seeds will sprout the following spring at a t about 50% viability but make a nice natural way to spread the size of your bed.

I just cut another nice bunch. Of course I’d have had quite a handful had I not been dining on the fresh stuff….thank God Ma didn’t catch me at it.
