I don’t have a Facebook account and don’t want one but I use to be able to look at fishing reports from resorts on Facebook without having a account… now it won’t let you look at anything without having or making a account. Anyone else notice this?

I don’t have a FB account either (and don’t want one) but running into similar issues. The other big one for me is classifieds. Seems like C List is drying up.

Totally. I don’t have a FB account either. My wife actually found our boat this summer on FB. She likes giving me $hit that she actually found it. rotflol

Ran into the same problem I just created a random account to see resorts and used it to get a wheeler for Xmas since I had no luck on Craigslist. I joined ice castle owners group and just follow resorts for updates. No personal information and no friends = no bs to weed through. It’s doing good so far.

I just put in a random dad name and used a walleye pic for my photo only put enough information just to get it activated. Not even sure I put my phone number in when it asked.

Lol I have to say I never see drama on FB like its always claimed. I think the only people who think FB is all drama are old guys who don’t have an account.

Anyway as others have said just create an account with no info or friends. Problem solved. There are a lot of helpful groups I’ve joined. Mostly groups about cooking/smoking meats, fishing, and truck enthusiasts.

A bunch of buddies use Facebook to talk back and forth for fishing all season. I just have never broke down. I been telling myself stay out. Wife keeps saying- just put in your description “unless you want to talk fishin- don’t reach out to me”

I’ve been on the FB for close to 10 years. It’s a love/hate thing for me. Can’t bring myself to get rid of it though for some of the reasons above. Buying and selling items has been way easier than CL. Tons of special interest groups to join. I’m a member of some fishing , ATV, and lake place groups. Just have to learn how to weed out what you don’t like. Best advice is to keep your friend count to an absolute minimum. The ghost account idea makes sense if you don’t intend to interact with friends or family.

Facebook is harmless… it will do to you what you let it do to you. There are some who a few short years ago, before becoming members, who thought IDO’s site is the devils work… just sayin’ smirk

In all seriousness, can you really use your real name but never like or comment on family members posts without causing a rift?

The obligation or at least perceived obligation of doing that is what keeps me away.

Don’t have any of that with IDO….

Facebook is great for selling items. I sold my boat a tree stand ice auger and even a pair of used boots. One thing that’s nice is most of the buyers are local.

You’re internet provider is already looking at all of your traffic and selling information for targeted advertising.

Every app you install on your smartphone is accessing your contacts, email, search history, microphone, etc. to collect data for targeted advertising.

FB is just another form of data collection used to make money.

Agreed. If you are on the internet, you are being tracked. It doesn’t have to be a social media platform.

As far as Facebook goes – you control who, what, and how you see things. If you let Facebook become dramatic, you are choosing to do so. I have whittled mine down to essentially outdoor reports and resorts, and the closest of family members and friends. If a person shares and posts junk that pops up and is annoying, you can simply unfollow or unfriend them. Facebook Marketplace is dealing a slow but sure death to Craigslist. It is far easier to communicate and has more offerings/postings of gear that is not solely located in metropolitan areas.

this i true. i will say about marketplace though that their filter options suck for searching for cars. Also, they need to do something about the scammers. i cant tell you how many great trucks ive seen “for sale” in San Diego for about 10k under book value.

Probably true, but you can’t sell a lot of things on FB. Such as bows, arrows, guns, ammunition etc. So there will still be a place outside of FB for those and similar items.

I have had a FB account for who knows how long but I never talk/look/comment on anything….even family. No happy birthdays to the random friend or even family through FB. I will call people direct if I want to talk to them!

One thing for selling stuff on there it is somewhat nice to be able to scope out the person before you tell them to come buy your stuff. Not that it’s fool proof, but some people make it pretty easy to realize you want to steer clear of them.

Isn’t FB like any other public forum in a way? You have everything FB has just not the audience?

FB will ban anything they don’t agree with, delete posts, ban membership for wrong posts.

    Censorship I guess.

I don’t have FB. So I don’t know if that’s how all this works though.

Sure why not. I have had one for about six months. No friends no profile no pics. Just an account so I can view reports and shop used items. I honestly don’t really know how to do most of that stuff. I just use the search tool.

I am not on Facebook for many of the reasons stated above, however I have noticed that when I email a company (thru their own website) or a fishing guide or various other people, I generally dont get a response. After a few days, my wife will message that person or business thru facebook and a get a response very quickly. Quite frustrating honestly, almost like people are relying on Facebook for general communication

I am not on FB and have thought about joining some times for many of the reasons listed. Many years ago my wife made me an account to show me how many acquaintances I have that wanted to contact me. Most of them were ex-girlfriends that wanted to meet up. LOL It was not hard to convince her to delete the account. One thing I don’t like about FB is I had a buddy over in the middle of summer talking about making him a hard water rod. That conversation lead into portable ice houses. The next day his Facebook account had advertisements on ice houses. His phone lesson in on our conversation.

Can you create a fake account and not allow access to things on your phone like mic, GPS, camera, ect?

    Funny this came up.

I had an account to access fishing groups and boat groups plus some local stuff.

I was messing around with my profile and I guess changed something that booted me out. Birthday or something. Sure enough I’m blocked for 30days then deleted unless I request a review. I requested a review and was told I need to provide a photo copy of my drivers license, passport, birth certificate etc. or two other forms of ID such as bank account information, voters card etc. This is to make sure I am who I say I am. As a victim of identity theft that resulted in an arrest and an undercover operation with the state police, I let Facebook know what I thought of there policy.

I’ll get on through a different account someday since some fishing groups I actually meet up with only schedule events on Facebook.

I don’t notice advertisements because I don’t look at my page. Go to a an account. If you get denied seeing something. Log in so you can access all the account. Log out. Facebook is not the only thing that tracks you. Certain websites I have noticed this well before I joined Facebook.
