The one that got away

I thought it would be fun to post some trail cam pictures of the animal that got away. This is in the deer forum but any animal could be posted. I was thinking of ones that you knew were shot by someone else. Maybe on your property by a friend or on a neighboring property.

This pig was shot on the next property over.

Don’t have any pictures of him, but in 2004 I had been keeping tabs on a nice 12 point all summer, that fall was the first time our zone was earn a buck (wisconsin), and guess who the first deer I see that bow season was. Had to let him pass at 20 , he caught my wind after passing and turned around and went straight back in the woods and stared in my general direction for a few minutes and then out of site he went. That was the last time I saw him in daylight. Twice more I saw him at night, he was spotted having an epic brawl with another buck the following fall and that was the last anyone I know saw of him. If shot by a local they did a very good job of keeping it quiet (not likely). I suspect he died of some form of natural causes.

Keeping an eye out for a nice wide buck I’ve gotten a lot of pictures of the last 2 years, no sign yet and I’m starting to think he may have suffered the same fate. I suspect he would be 6 years old this year if he is still out there. When I get back to my computer I’ll have to dig up some pics of him. I have never laid eyes on this buck outside of what my cameras catch.

Correction on my second buck in the above article, I think he would be 5 this year, possibly six but more likely 5. This daylight picture from 2012, the date is wrong, this picture was taken around noon or so on 11-11. The second daylight picture is what I believe to be the same buck in 2013, taken at the same wild apple trees on 11-11 exactly one year to the date in mid day (one of the few daylight pictures I have of him). You can bet if my tag is open on 11-11-14 and I know he is still out there, I will not be at work that day.

The nighttime picture is one that shows his width a little better. I really hope this guy shows up on camera soon to let me know he is still out there, or better yet under my stand next Saturday evening.

This is Massey, a 2.5 or maybe 3.5 year old that I got a ton of pictures of. He had great potential if we could have let him go one more year. I saw him twice during daylight during bow season then he just disappeared. I don’t know if someone shot him or he moved to a different location, but we never saw him again. Man he was a beautiful buck!

We watched this buck for 4 years I think. I even had him at 40 yards but couldn’t get a shot. A neighbor ended up getting him while I was at work, just a few hours after I had trail cam video of him working a scrape on our land. He was a great buck and a challenge to hunt.

@deertracker That right brow tine has given me nightmares for years! ) It’s amazing how trail cameras have changed hunting. For the most part these bucks are so elusive that I would never know they are living in the area, but after getting a couple years worth of pictures I feel like I really start to know the deer. It was a sad day when I saw the wide 8 in the back of another hunter’s truck, but rewarding that I was finally able to see the buck up close. He was a unique deer that hopefully was able to spread his genes many times.
