The best may be yet to come…

I am surprised by all the open water chatter. The best ice fishing of the year may be just beginning! I have found excellent ice conditions and quality fish in the Walker area and points slightly south and north. The access areas are not even poor yet. If you think about access points that are not exposed to the south and southwest there are virtually no worries right now. With the dip in temps about to happen and the lack of snow cover we should make some ice!

Fish are starting to show up in typical soft bottom areas as the systems are coming alive! If you want to stow away the ice gear, I understand but the best may be yet to come! Yesterday produced crappies to 1.85 pounds. Aggressive sized tackle has produced most days but if they are a bit off try the Crystaleyes Micros. Excellent option.

Looks great! Late/last ice Crappies are always something I look forward to every year…But alas, I cannot travel north for anymore trips this year or I will be in the dog house…My last ice haul was last weekend down here in the metro. Sad, but I do love pre-spawn Walleyes on the river! Glad there’s still some good ice up north for all to play on.

Lots of open water in the north metro today. Going to take a lot of cold to even put walkable ice back on those lakes.

I have to agree we still had some drivable ice here in Alexandria as of Saturday and a lot of drivable ice just north of us. Some lakes have 18″-20″ of hard ice. There are some lakes that are getting dark with all this wind but still plenty good to walk on. Yet the Alexandria sheriff was saying two weeks ago not to venture on the ice at all! They should keep crying wolf until no one believes what they say. This must be what Trump means by Fake News! grin

Great fishing here and very few fisherman anywhere waytogo

According to the DNR map, the lake I’ve been ice fishing all winter opened up today. My ice fishing is done for this year (

Plenty of ice here in Walker, mn. I pulled my house Sun.from Leech Lake. The access had water but this next week they show below zero up in Walker. Still lots of ice and plenty to drive a truck just be safe and check by or near a pressure ridge. I agree Deron if its stays cold lots of late ice fishing and you can always use the wheeler. The best is coming soon. Just check as it changes daily Watch the weather. No ice is safe but watch where you travel. Southern lakes are no good head north for good ice or get the boat ready for a river.

Hey Deron was wondering what was the depth of water you were in and were those great looking crappies suspended?

Morning Joe! I have guide trips the next 3 weekends, but during the week I am looking good next week. Not sure if you’re able during the week or not but give me a call anytime 218-226-8488. The crappies were within a foot or two if the bottom scattered over 26 to 28 feet btw…
