How is everyone handling Thanksgiving gatherings this year?

Looking for options instead of traditional gathering of kids/families around the table.

Wife, me and one friend. And of course they want all the sides. Seems like a shame to make that much food for 3 people.

No gathering for us. I have the responsibility of my father’s health, so no chances in our family

We slimmed it down this year. Usually there are 5-6 families that get together. This year it will just be my wife, kids, & I going to my folks.

I’m more worried about Christmas plans.. My grandma’s brother is planning on coming here for Christmas from Washington State. He brings a boat load of fresh seafood and we have a GIANT seafood dinner!! Crab, Flounder, Scallops, Shrimp, etc. I’m really going to be bummed if that one gets canceled..

Same. We arent changing our menu and I will bring “leftovers” to my parents and their friends who dont have family nearby like we always do.
I havent decided if I am going to make 2 turkeys again this year or just go with one. I have been frying them for years, but last year a smoked one as well and that was fantastic. I think I will just do 1 and fry it.

Our plans are up in the air for now. We abruptly began rethinking our plans when a family friend and coworker (in her late 40s with no previous health issues) was put on a ventilator and is in the ICU. Things have gotten real in our area in a hurry. Ultimately the decision is going to be my parents’ to make. They’re the oldest most vulnerable ones…but they rarely get to see us all at once.

The tentative plan was that my wife, daughter, and I were heading to my parents. My 2 siblings and their significant others would be there also bringing our total to 8 adults and 1 child.

My wife and daughter are waiting results of COVID test. If they come back negative by next week and nothing new comes up, we will spend it with my wifes family. I will stop and see my parents after Thanks Giving.

Both my parents and my wifes parents don’t want us to stay away.

Just postpone your family Thanksgiving and Christmas get togethers until July, that’s what we’re doing, it’s not worth getting somebody you love sick. Let’s bare down and stop the spread of this crap, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel in just a few months!

My plan was to grill a 20 LB turkey on my new Masterbuilt 560 smoker. I even bought a rotisserie for it.
I drove down to Ferdale Farms in Cannon Falls and bought the turkey.

Now, no one is coming over and I’m not grilling a 20 pound turkey for just Mrs KFK and me.

We decided for Thanksgiving we will make pizzas from scratch instead of turkey.

I took the entire week off next week. Maybe I’ll break out the Masterbuilt and grill a whole chicken some time next week. I really want to use the rotisserie.

Normally we have several gatherings over several days, but Thursday is usually just me and my wife and we get Thanksgiving dinner for two from Hy-Vee. This year we are skipping all the other gatherings. I’m sure I will fire of the smoker to replace those other meals.

How do you like that masterbuilt? That is the gravity series right? BTW rotisseries are amazing!
I have a kamado and bought a joetisserie for it and its unreal. Wings in a based, I cook brats/hotdogs in a flat basket. All sorts of things. You will love it. I have yet to do a bird on it though.

Regular plans at our house, safely due to our house and my parents already having Rona recently, and thankfully recovered, healthy and testing negative now.

We have cancelled our traditional Thanksgiving at my parents with all the relatives. Instead it will be just me, Mrs Grouse and the 2 grouselets at home.

We want to do our part to NOT spread this thing. The hospitals are full enough and the healthcare workers deserve our support.

Cancelled for our family. It’s a real downer because getting together with my parents, siblings, and the next generation of nephews is one of my favorite things to do. Hope everyone is still able to enjoy their modified plans, sounds like there will still be some celebration from IDO’ers.

Tomorrow i’m going to hit the grocery store and then hunker down by myself for the next week to 14 days. At some point I will hop in the truck and take a drive, maybe to Warroad, maybe to Ely.

I have 3 books ready to be read, some football to watch, and some guys on the internet to urine off. grin

I anticipate i’ll be just fine.

We are putting a small turkey in the insta pot for the four of us. Don’t need to be to blame for either of our parents getting it. I don’t mind the idea of being at home versus running around or having a bunch of people over will give some good time with just us and the kids. Anyone we could have over we can call every day on the phone

Just made the call to cancel what was already going to be a “limited” gathering on my Wife’s side that we were going to host. Sucks, but just seems like the right thing to do for us. Will be My wife, two boys, myself, too much food and some really horrible football.
