Initial test ‘report’ on the CVA Accura

On a post here back around Christmas I had posted a picture of the new CVA Accura MR I had purchased. Well due to the weather and my son getting ill I wasn’t able to get out and shoot it till this past weekend. I had no intention of really fine tuning and zero’ing it it, pretty much just wanted to send some lead down the barrel to get a feel for it. So off to the farm I went.
The weapon is a CVA accura V2 MR. My initial loading was 100gr of Blackhorn 209 powder behind a 248 grain powerbelt hollowpoint. I also had some TC sabots (240 gr hollow point, don’t remember the bullet name) that I figured I’d try out too, though me preference is to stick with the powerbelts. So I set up the table and put a target up at 40 yards and got ready to have some fun. In the picture you will see the first two shots, they are the ‘bottom’ 2. Not too shabby considering my ‘bore sighting’ was to look down the barrel and then adjust the scope to ‘match’. Its a 50 cal. bullet to help reference the size of my target. So I made one adjustment and then fired off 7 more shots. The 2 shots below the ‘main’ group and above the first 2 shots were my ‘oops’ otherwise not to bad of a group (last shot went though the hole the other 4 in that group made). Trigger is crisp and there is an adjustment screw but I think I’ll leave it right were it is. Compared to my TC black mountain side lock she feels a lot more like a center fire rifle than a muzzleloader, though I’m not really comparing apples to apples either as I shoot patch and roundball behind 70gr a true black powder in that gun. All in all I was pretty impressed, I’ll be impatiently awaiting more spring like weather to really put it to the test, zero it in and do some long distance shots.

Cleaning was a bit of an adventure, with more ‘parts’ and crevices for crud to hide in I’d say it was a lot more of a job than my TC is and more than I was expecting, but still not too bad.

Forgot to mention, of the 9 rounds, 6 were the powerbelt and 3 TC sabots. At 40 yards there was no difference in trajectory, but I will need to test at longer ranges.
(40 yards was the distance from where we set the table up to the edge of the yard and a real easy spot to put the target up, no real other rationale for using that distance)

I was pleasantly suprised at how it shot, will be fun to really put it through the paces, but I’m going to hold off till we have more comfortable shooting weather and no snow to trudge through setting up/moving the target. Max range I can shoot in our ‘normal’ shooting area at the farm is about 400 yards, but I don’t plan to shoot that far with this gun.

I would own one right now if Cabelas would have had on in stock during their sale.

yeah they were getting thin on em even when I was there the weekend after Christmas. They didn’t have any thumbhole ones which was my original pick, but after handling this one and then a thumbhole Omega I didn’t feel that much of a difference in the feel to me anyway, and I likes the weathershield coating the MR had.

The rubber ‘grips’ on it are really nice, helps out a lot. That’s a problem with my TC Black mountain, that smooth walnut stock is so slippery when wearing gloves its difficult to keep a good hold on it.
