I am looking at starting to reload .223 and .308 and I have some questions. What do I need to get started; I know I need a press, dyes, etc but do I need a tumbler and all the fancy case resizing equipment right away, or can I purchase them later. I am looking at a Hornady kit that comes with a press, scale, powder dispenser, priming tool, case lube and reloading book. I know I need to buy the dyes and shell holders in addition to the kit, just wondering if the resizing tools are also necessary. Thanks for the help.

Well, first the bad news. You won’t be getting into reloading anytime soon.

Unfortunately, this is because unless you are on a first name basis with the Almighty himself and have his cell phone number, you won’t find any bullets, powder, or most importantly primers anywhere on His green Earth.

Reloading components are non-existant and all signs indicate that primers especially will be almost impossible to obtain for many, many months.

But to your question: What do you need. By “sizing” I assume you’re referring to case trimming. The dies resize the brass, but eventually it stretches and then needs to be trimmed. You generally will get several firings on each case before it needs to be trimmed.

You don’t need a polising tumbler and my father reloaded for 20 years without one. If cases got too grubby, he hand cleaned them.

You do need an accurate balance or electronic scale AND a powder measure. The scale is used to dial in the measure and after that the measure throws uniform charges that only need to be verified periodically.

You need a primer pocket cleaner and you may as well buy a stuck case extraction kit now. Sooner or later you will need one, believe me.

You also need a digital micrometer. This is a necessity for consistent loading.

    Good luck.

Here is a good post from a couple months back that has a ton of info in it! – I just didn’t want to re-type it all
Hornady reloading equipment is ok, but for a reasonable amount more, RCBS, Lyman, Dillon offer in my opinion a better press
