I was able to shoot my new Savage Axis last weekend for the first time. I started out at 25 yards and had my groups within 1″. I didn’t have a bench and the bipod I purchased was too short. So, I shot SD style, over the hood of my pickup. It wasn’t great, but it worked good enough to get the bullets on paper.
I moved my target back to 85 yards, which was the furthest I could shoot there. I was about 3 inches high. So, I’ve got some work to do. The group was about 2.5 inches in diameter, so I’ve got some work to do between the ears also.
After shooting a few rounds, it was clear to me I need to do something with the trigger. Instead of having a gun smith perform the known alteration, I decided to order the Rifle Basix SAV1 trigger. One, it came recommended from a member here, The Famous Grouse. Two, I read a lot of positive reviews about this product. I placed the order yesterday and it was shipped yesterday. I should have it by the weekend.
I’m planning to stretch the legs a bit on the beast this weekend. 1st goal will be to get the 100 yard group sub 2 inches at 1.5 inches high. Then, start moving back and see how the BDC reticle and I get along. It’s the first I’ve owned and I can’t wait to try it out.
A couple more accessories are on order. The Harris bipod and scope covers from Butlter Creek. Then I’ll have this baby pretty well tricked out.
More to follow after the weekend!
