I found this video clip my daughter shot with her Nikon camera while I was popp’n some prairie dogs. This rough video (about 10 seconds or so) is a 490 yrd shot on a rat that was ticking me off. Kept stepping back behind its mound, then popping up again. Finally got a shot on him, and DANG, I love the report sound of those Barnes TSX bullets. I had just worked up a secondary load to have for my Howa with the Barnes TSX 50gr FB, Varget powder, and Fed prem 210 primers. Too bad I couldn’t have had a few vids of the impacts Chrony was just over 3900fps with this load. But taking into account how slow sound is, the report on the impact is pretty darn fast for covering that type of distance. Nearly impossible to see, but the mound I’m shooting at is the farthest one out in the center.

We’ve tried to get good video on PD hunts, but it’s really tough with the distances and the heat shimmer. You need a long-long lense and it has to be an optical lense, not a digital enhancement. What I’ve found is that the camera has to be on a tripod to get a decent video at 400 yards. I tired some hand held shots last year and they are all crap.

The .22-250 and pasture poodles is about the most fun you can have with your pants on. Whenever I shoot that caliber and I really think about it, I just cannot believe how flat that cartridge shoots. It’s freaky as [censored].

If you think about the bullet drop you’d have to play shooting say a .25-06 or a 308 at that distance, it’s just amazing that you can be out there at 400+++ yards and be compensating for drop by adding a couple of inches.

I played around with the 50, 53, and 55 gr bullets from Hornady and Barnes in this gun. The 53’s from Barnes didn’t do well. But there is very little difference between the 50 & 55; until a cross wind. The 55’s did the best with 15-20 mph winds. Still was enough to blow it around, but not too bad.
