I have always read not to shoot steel through older shotgun barrels. What classifies as “older”? Is there a date (approximate) cutoff for which barrels can handle it and which cannot?

I wouldn’t shoot steel through anything without a removable choke system. At least not very much.

Kind of what I was thinking.

I remember getting a class action payment for my old 870 so Remington couldn’t be held liable if I broke the barrel using steel. I have done it many times over the years before that because nobody said there was a problem with it.

As long as the OLD gun has a IC or Mod. barrel I think you will be OK – If it is a Full I’d not shoot any steel shot thru it. You can have choke Tubs installed for not to much $. I have several old Full choke barrels cut down and tube’s installed about 10 years ago. I think the cost was right around $80.00 and that included 1 ckoke tube
