Ive got a 12 guage 3.5 inch pump 870 and had problems extracting shells after they have been fired, leaving them in the chamber. Anyone had this problem and know what the fix is.

Mine does too. If I short stroke it…it won’t throw the spent shell every time.

Not to insult your intelligence, but start basic. Is the shell being grabbed by the extractor? If not, is the brass expanded so far that it fills in the head space?
My issue was the head spacing, too much had been milled away and the brass was being allowed to expand far too much.
This may not be the answer you are looking for, but when it comes to anything that goes bang, I value my life enough to where I will pay a guy to fix it.

X2 Sounds like a bad extractor

My guess would be the extactor also. Unless it’s a new gun. If it has had some use it probably is just worn a little. Cheap fix too.

It will grab the brass but wont hold onto the shell. It will leave the the shell in the chamber and the brass will have some good marks on it where the extractor was grabing onto it. Gun is about 2 years old has had maybe 200 shells through it. Was hoping it was something easy guess its heading to the gun smith.

I had this problem on a Benelli during extreme cold weather. Found out I could only shoot Remmington shells during that late goose season with that gun. Have you tried other ammunition to be sure it’s not cheap shells??

I would take it to a reputable gunsmith. I see your in Rochester but the only one I can recommend is Bob at Joe’s Sporting Goods in St Paul.

Call remington I had an 1187 that the camo was pealing of and my FFL sent it back to them and they sent me a brand new gun a year after I bought it. They stand behind there product it’s worth a try.

This is a common problem on 870 “express” models. See more of it on the Super Mags.

My nephew has a super mag.
If he shoots federal, low-brass, trap loads (ribbed hull), it seems that the hull or maybe the brass will hang up. If he shoots Win AA low brass trap loads, that have a “smooth hull”, never an issue.

He has to use a ram-rod to break the shot casing free.

So, it is either the hull or brass that hangs up.
    It doesn’t happen on 3″ or 3.5″.

Haven’t shot enough loads yet through it to see if it is high/low brass or smooth/ribbed hulls.
