The Savage/Marlin autos can be lighter but you do risk getting a lemon in those selections. I had a Savage I bought and dumped quickly and working in sporting goods for a couple of years, I heard plenty of “dissatisfying” remarks. Bolts, in spite of the tube magazine, are safer to operate so the savage, marlin, mossbergs…… in a bolt, might be the better way to go, for light weight and durability.
It’s also true that while the Ruger is heavy now, he’s going to be able to handle it in another 5 years. Prices are only going up and 5 years vs. the rest of his life is a very short time to wait. It would be a GREAT investment! Otherwise, just get a crickett for now and work out “HIS” first gun deal later. If you’re offering to buy half of a Ruger, it’s about enough to just buy a crickett or Youth Rossi for educating and “breaking in” your sons.
Also, I like the Bible verse thing….. Guys need supporting comments on standing up for their convictions! SALUTE!
Good luck on your decision! I’m sure you’ll have a lot of fun no matter your choice. And yes….. overall, long run, smart purchase, I don’t own one myself but the reputation is undeniable….. Ruger 10/22 all the way. I have a 597…. nice, but not as reliable as the rotary fed Ruger.
