Anybody have or shoot one of these yet ? I have an opportunity to pick one up, on a trade. What caliber would you get ? I can choose from .270, 30-06, 308 or 7mm. Any insight appreciated.

Good value for the money, sub 1″ at 100 (Hornady ammo used). Other ammo shot up to 2″ at 100. I am not a sharpshooter so this is miniscule for me. Decent finish and nice look overall. I am not into “pretty” guns, so I typically appreciate the synthetic stock myself.
What is the application of the rifle? 7mm is my choice all around, but I only own one rifle. -06 will take care of almost anything in North America, and allows for a huge variety of bullet sizes, and is much cheaper to shoot than most “big game” rifles. That being said, .270 is my favorite deer round, hands down. We have killed deer, elk, and a couple of alaskan black bears without problem! I shy away from the .308 myself, but it has its application as well.

I am leaning towards 7mm myself… I have a .270, love it, 2 in 30-06, love them too… I have the opportunity to add to my collection and was thinking it would be a back-up or one my young nephew can cut his teeth on this fall

I could be your step nephew this fall and use it. My .270 short broke last year and I haven’t wanted to put the money needed into fixing it. I might be shooting my sons .243 Marlin youth this fall.

Which way did you go on this Big G? I was thinking (as I’m catching up on everything here…..gone too long!) that for a bolt action, young person, and not jumpy over the recoil, you’ve got a decent offering here. I’d choose the 270 or 308. Readily available ammo and really Ford vs. Chevy, ballistically speaking. I own guns in both calibers and the 150gr. 270 rounds are about identical to 150gr. 308 rounds. Curiously though, the 308 maintains better energy at longer range though? Not sure why that would be but I use both on whitetails cuz they really are a horse a piece. For shorter, thicker conditions, I uprade to a 180gr. 308. Hardly a difference in accuracy at 100yds and it maintains good energy while slowing the velocity, which helps in the expansion reliabilities of the round. Either way, better suited for young hunters are both the 270 and 308, and just as deadly no matter the age we become! If long range shooting is the norm, the .06 and 7mm become the better tools, according to preference of the individual.
