One of our younger subcontractors went to go buy an AR yesterday. He is a few months from being 20 years old. Anyway they told him he needs to be 21? And that he needs the handgun training…Can you gun guys lend some insite, would I (38 years old) need a handgun certificate before shopping for that style of rifle? Do you need to be 21 before taking the handgun training?

    Thanks for the info

I’ll wait for others to confirm but my gut feeling is that was a load of crap. I think 18 is the magic age and you dont need special training/certification to buy a gun. Just no felonys on record.

This was Gander Mountain, and they told him any “Military” style gun falls under those guidelines

When I worked for Gander back in college, I know they mentioned to me that they had the right to refuse to sell a gun for just about any reason. Of course that can lead to bad publicity and a bad taste for many people.

I know where I live I have been told that to buy any AR style gun you need a hand gun permit. Not so much training just the free permit to buy, and I think to get that you do need to be 21. Rumor has it that in Goodhue county MN there is a loop hole where you can get around it.

Not sure how he did it but he thought he needed it and the store he bought it from was sure he did but never needed it. But when I was going to buy one last year they I couldn’t get it cause I didn’t have a permit to buy. sounds like they where being honest with you.

Yeah, I think you need a “permit to purchase”. But that is free and just requires a background check, not any handgun training. And needing to be 21 wouldn’t surprise me–you need to be 21 to buy centerfire pistol ammo.

I have never heard of such a thing but I live in Michigan. I have owned AR’s all of which I bought before I was 21 and have never needed a permit. Sounds like MN is way different than MI.

I was told by a guy that works at cabelas in owatonna that you do need a permit to buy. But what he told me was if you are under 21 but at least 18 that you can still get a permit to buy but its only good for assult type rifles, not pistols.

on pistols and military style semi auto guns you do need a permit to purchase or wait a 7 or 14 day period from what i get from the guy i just talked to at gander mtn in rochester. Which i find complete crap, what is the difference between a ruger 10/22 and a dpms .223 Our great government at work

For an ar-15 you need to be 21 year of age. Have a valid Permit to purchase or Concealed Carry Permit

I know when I worked at Gander this was THEIR policy. I don’t think it was state or federal Guidelines.

    From what I can find:

    Quote:

    Ineligible Persons

The following classes of people are ineligible to possess, receive, ship, or transport firearms or ammunition:

Those convicted of crimes punishable by imprisonment for over one year, except state misdemeanors punishable by two years or less.

    Fugitives from justice.

Unlawful users of certain depressant, narcotic, or stimulant drugs.

Those adjudicated as mental defectives or incompetents or those committed to any mental institution.

    Illegal aliens.

Citizens who have renounced their citizenship.

Those persons dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.

Persons less than 18 years of age for the purchase of a shotgun or rifle.

Persons less than 21 years of age for the purchase of a firearm that is other than a shotgun or rifle.

Persons subject to a court order that restrains such persons from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner.

Persons convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

This is a federal regulation, not state. I guess this begs the question is an AR15 considered a “rifle” by their standards.

I’ve got a call into the ATF and Attorney General office to get some clarification on this issue. I will get back with what I find out.

The ATF got back to me on this and they confirmed in Minnesota you must be 21 and have either a Permit to purchase, or a Permit to Carry to purchase a MILITARY style weapon. They said there is a list of firearms that are defined as MILITARY style firearms.

Permitt to Purchase = Good for one year.
Permitt to Carry = Good for five years, and you can purchase with it also!
