I have a Taurous 44Mag. and a ruger .357 GP100 both 4 inch barrles, i know they are not ideal for hunting with the shorter barrels but why not give it a shot. But what type of scopes would most recomened for these types of pistols. I will be getting one drilled and tapped here soon but am torn between scopes. MY guess my farthest shot would be around 45 yards so would a red dot be ok? any help would be great.

I’m not sure I can answer your question, but I can add to your question!

    I had a Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 7in barrel…maybe 8 but no difference.
The scope wasn’t hard to pick out, but it turned out the mounts were.

I found that I couldn’t shoot more than 3 factory loads with it before the scope moved. Which really sucked!

This was in ’75 so I don’t really remember the mounts or other particulars.

I had one of my .357 Ruger Blackhawks scoped with a Red Dot reticule scope and loved it. I did get it from Cabela’s, but I don’t think that particular scope is available anymore, but there are others now I think would be even better. Mounts are extremely important.

I also have a .44 mag Super Black Hawk scoped,10 inch barrel, and the scope is great. A Weaver 4x for magnum hand guns. Your correct in that the challenge is the scope mount. I did NOT drill tap the gun for fixed mount. Instead using a B Square mount that uses the rear sight screw hole, then it ‘clamps’ onto the barrel. After two or three shots, it’s loose. I’m thinking a trading the gun for a Red Hawk hunter model so I can have the fixed mounts built right into the gun….

Scopes, measure your shooting position, and get the scope that has your ‘reach’ as ‘sighting relief’ from the scope. Shop accordingly. Bit I like my Weaver and it didn’t break the bank to get it.Most good ones come in both Blued and Stainless…

I did. I should mention that it was in the .44 mag version.

Loved the gun…the scope mounts not so much.

    BK,
what scope mounts did you go with? And scope for that matter?
What didn’t you like about them?

This was back in the ’70’s. I don’t recall.

Even with locktite, three shots would throw the scope off. Very disappointing.

I sold that gun a long long time ago.
