Just a little info folks if your interested,

The first Saturday in March 2011 – Located just south of Marshfield, WI. a few miles there will be a Cold Bore event, I believe at 600 yards. You will be able to shoot up to 2 different guns, nothing larger then a 338 Lapua.
This will be held at Fox trackers

And then again the last Saturday of April 2011 – there will be another Cold Bore event shooting at 600 and 880 yards. Bring a little extra ammo last time they also did a 3 shot grouper at 880. I believe here you can shoot up to 3 different rifles, nothing larger then a 338 Lapua. This will be held at River Ranch which is also a few miles south of Marshfield, WI.

Any questions, ask away I will try to answer

Here’s a little more info on the events

    The Cold Bore events

Entry fees in the past were $10.00 per rifle

Cash payout after everyone’s done and the target is brought up for review and placing

Folks start showing up around 9:00 am and it seems to wrap up around 4:30.

I think last April at the R&R event there were around 43 shooters at the 600 and 29 shooters for the 880

Guns that are allowed are 338s and under

In the past they did open up the range the week prior for folks that need to get their marks. I tend to trust my zero and do the math on the day of the events, because every day is different.

Note; The day of the shoot!

No sight ins or warm ups the day of the shoot, Cold bore – one shot for one hit

The R&R range is a few miles south of Marshfield off of Highway A in the township of Richfield – the R&R Ranch, (highway A to Richfield – at the town hall and bar turn to the west and go a mile or so the R&R Ranch is on the south side of road)

Fox trackers is a ½ mile south on highway A yet from the Richfield town hall and bar and then east on a dead end road

Range targets are at a estimated distance of 600 & 880 yards you will be aiming at a 6” orange dot with the 1” black diamond in the middle – you are able to check the distance with your LRF

At the river Ranch event you will have a elevated position – bench that you shoot from, I usually spin the seat up high and shoot off of my bipod versus the bags that will be available, there is talk that folks will have to shoot off of the sand bags vs the bi-pods so be prepared if this change takes place. I guess a few of us using pods and shooting well seemed to be an advantage over the folks using the sand bags that are provided.

This event draws folks from all walks of life; safety rules are followed and for the most part a good group to BS with. The guns used are a big mix from factory, factory tactical, to customs. And with that, a good mix of expertise from the shooters a good group to hang out with.

In the past you where allowed to shoot two different guns at the Fox tracker event and up to three different guns at the R&R event

This year my son Dustin and I will be sharing rifles we will both be shooting a Remington 700 tactical in a 308 and a Barrett in a 338 Lapua.

Guns can be used by a maximum of three shooters in the past.

Food and refreshments available at both events.

Let me know if you have any other questions

Hope to see a few folks from here

A couple of questions what scope size do you use? I have a 4X12 on a 22-250. Its quite a ways to drive 1 hr for 1 shot can we shoot more? not for score of course, thanks Stan

    Stan

You will see a lot of different scopes surface, I have a 5-20×50 on the 338 Lapua and a 4-16×50 on the 308.

I’m not sure of the limits at the Fox Tracker shoot, but I do know you can shoot up to 3 different guns at the R&R event per distance that being est. 600 & 880 yards, as well as your gun can only be used a max of three times per distance – some folks share their guns with a few of their friends. Also last fall a bunch of us shot a 3 shot grouper round at 880 with the kitty going to the tightest group after the cold bore rounds.

It becomes very addictive and challenging you have to think about the conditions and make the shot.

    Hope this helps

You sign up the day of the shoot I would be there by 10-11:00 am for registration; I can’t remember when the cutoff for the first distance is. It has always been $10.00 a shot in the past, They start shooting shortly after reg. starts

I will let everyone know if I hear different

Jeff, how do you like that Vortex scope? I just ordered a 6-24×50 PST with FFP this morning. Can’t wait to get this rig up and running. I ordered mil/mil what is your preference?

My preference in scopes has had its changes through the years, I used to be a Luepold fan for years and yes they still make a great scope. From there when we started to get more ingrained in the extended distance shooting it was the Burris Fullfield II with the ballistic plex this was an awesome upgrade. A scope you could run the grid and it was always true.

The last 8 years I have been very active with the Vortex products mainly their binoculars. I have built a trust with the product quality and the customer service behind it. When I was looking for a scope that I could trust day in and out that was going to be used and abused and trust worthy shooting beyond 1000 yards. I went with the Vortex Razor ffp 5-20×50 with a MRAD – EBR3 reticle on the Barrett 338 Lapua; this thing is built like a tank and has proven itself in the many different test and evaluations that it’s been put up against.

Our resent build, a Remington 700 tactical special purpose with a 20” heavy barrel in a 308 sports a Vortex PST 4-16×50 ffp MRAD scope and a 20 moa base, here again I am 100% happy with it so far. In a couple weeks my son and I are going to Thunder Valley Precision in Ohio where we will see where the limits are with the Remington 308 I’m hoping for a little beyond 1300 with the 308 I would be happy with constant grouping at a 1000

As Far as The Barrett 338 Lapua and Vortex Razor I hope to confirm hits on steel out to 2000 plus yards. I think with the adjustment and my hash marks we should be able to aim using the cross hairs out to 2040, only time will tell. I have been shooting this set up for a year now and it has done very well.

I am a big fan of first focal plane scopes – I still prefer to dial up but having consistent reference marks for hold offs due to movers or changing winds allows you more versatility, I always say for the most part once you go ffp you never go back. I am also a big fan of mil/mil scopes it’s just easier to reference on, as far as hold offs or yardage estimation.

    Any other questions fire away
