Mounting a scope…

Most people slap a base, some rings, and finally the scope onto a rifle and call it good — Off to the range… Potentially with a misaligned (or worse – damaged ) scope.

But what is the PROPER way to mount a scope?

I have seen numerous alignment systems, ring lapping ideas, etc…

How do you guys get the proper ring alignment with the barrel?

How do you get the rings to be aligned with each other?

    Anyone lap the rings?

I have heard of people getting only 10-20% scope to ring contact before lapping… In lieu of lapping, some people use fillers such as powdered resins to aid in scope-to-ring contact — seems like a faster and less tedious method vs lapping the rings. Would any other materials work in a similar “filler” capacity? A very thin layer of bowstring wax maybe?

Any ideas for PROPER scope mounting, alignment and scope-to-ring contact would be appreciated.

Lapping the rings takes only minutes with the correct tool.

Worth doing in your opinion? I was looking at the tools from MidwayUSA.com…. Thought about buying the 1″ / 30mm combo kit to have for years of future use… Has both lapping tools plus ring aligner rods…
