7mm WSM bullet options

    Hi,
I recently purchased a Browning A Bolt chambered in 7mm WSM. The gun was dead nuts on at 100yds with Ballistic Silvertips 140 gr. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the penetration I was looking for after shooting 2 deer. I shot both of my deer at 10yds, a spike that ran about 50yds before piling up, and a doe that I hit in the shoulder and needed a follow up shot after some tracking. When we skinned both deer, there was some major damage, but not the big hole I was looking for, more like shrapenel damage.

My question is this. I know this gun isn’t the ideal “brush” or short distance gun for hunting in thick stuff, but I need a bullet that mushrooms instead of breaking apart on contact. Is this what the Ballistic Silvertips were intended to do? On the Wichester web site, the XP3 seems to be the bullet I need in 160gr. Any thoughts?

As someone said last year on my post on shooting 270 WSM with Ballistic Silvertips – ” Throw those Ballistic Silvertips as far out into a lake as you can ” I had the same results with them in 270 as your having in 7mm

I just seen that thread! Sounds like that’s a good idea, definately switching bullets next year. Thanks!

I made the switch to the Barnes TSX and the TTSX this last year and couldn’t be any happier with the results. My daughter shot a doe at about 50 yards and I shot a buck at 180 yards through brush and saplings. Bullets expanded but do not seperate. They hold better than 90% of the bullets original weight. In both cases, bullet entered and exited the deer with massive damage done in-between. My daughters doe was a front quartered shot taking out rib, heart/lung, and back shoulder blade. My buck was more than quartered away. Took out ribs, lungs, and 1/3 of the neck.
