Go custom or stay stock??? – Rifle accuracy

Assuming you had ~1k to spend on a rifle (1k = rifle itself… Accessories extra)… And wanted the following:

—Long range accuracy is the primary goal (target fun plus potential for deer sized game at long range)

—Weight doesn’t matter (actually, the heavier the better for recoil, but still want to keep it in a “hunting class” of rifle, not a strictly target gun.)

    —Heavy barrel preferably

—Ability to reload is nil currently (so assume factory ammo)

—Something in the 300 win mag type caliber, +/-. Would consider down to .270, up to .338. win mag, but most likely .300. Must be a popular caliber (i.e. .300 WM = more available factory ammo vs lesser known chamberings)

What would you buy? Mostly looking for gun make/model recommendations. Caliber is not that important in this point of my research.

Would I be looking at a factory/stock rifle, or can you get a better custom gun for that ~1k? If so, what company would off such a custom gun, and how much better could I expect this custom gun to be (shooting factory ammo) vs a stock Remington 700 with factory ammo?

I’m a big fan of the Remington 700, so something like the Sendero is very interesting to me. Or maybe the 700 XCR Tactical Long Range… My .243 700 SPS Varmint is a VERY solid shooter even with factory ammo. Half MOA at ranges up to 400 yards with factory ammo. For someone who doesn’t shoot that much currently, I’m happy with its performance.

Any thoughts from some of you more advanced guys that have shot lots and lots of different rifles? (Randy, Ruger, et al)…

Worth going to a custom, or can you get similar results with some of today’s factory guns?

    Thanks!

    Mike

Sounds like your mind has been made up. And a good choice it is! I would also go with the remington 700 in 300 win. mag. Personally I would go with a med-light barrel if you plan on walking distance or shooting offhand. I have a Savage American Classic in .243 that I really like. It has accutrigger and a detachable magazine. This gun has unmatched high luster stock and blueing. Not sure if it’s available in 300 wm but if it does its a close second choice to the Remington BDL classic for about $200 less.Upgraded scope? hmmmmmm!

Thanks for the input… I have a .30-06 that is light and functional, which should work fine for most hunting which requires a lighter rifle… Not my favorite, though, I’ve never gotten outstanding accuracy with the ’06 (Browning A-bolt). Thinking more along the lines of a heavier barreled rifle that will never take any long walks with me.

I’ve been looking at the Savage 111. I’ve heard great things about this rifle (both for accuracy and value). You can get into their top of the line for way under $1000.00. Sounds like it is a real tack driver.

I have a 6mm Remington and it is awsome at long range with plenty of knock down power for deer. It is extremly accurate at long range and is a blast to shoot.

My 7mm RM Encore is giving me issues right now (see my other post).. Probably more to do with operator error.. Hopefully I can pinpoint the problem. Otherwise, I like the rifle quite a bit. I seem to remember shooting very well with it last year, not sure what’s going on this year….

Don’t overlook Savage rifles. They are not the prettiest guns, but I have three and all are absolute tack drivers. I have a .25-06, a .270win and a .300WSM and all shoot better than I could have hoped for. When I broke in my 25-06, I was able to put 5 shots in 1 hole at 100 yards with Ballistic Tip ammo.

You can buy a Savage and have money for your rings and scope and still be able to take your wife out for supper with the change from $1K. JMHO.

Cooper is unveiling a new Magnum series line this week that will have MOA @ 1000 yards, guaranteed. Mag calibers starting at roughly $2500. If you are not lookng for quite that big, there non-magnum calibers can be had for around $1500, very impressive rifles. Top with a Huskemaw or Nightforce, and let the longrange shooting begin.

I second the Savage. I have a Savage Model 10FCP-K308 Law Enforcement and love it. It drives tacks. Have a Sheperds Scoped mounted on it. Gun came in at 800 dollars brfore scope.
