I recently won a TC Omega Z5 and am looking for any and all help regarding not only this firearm, but muzzleloaders in general. I have read through some of the past posts and I have some ideas on what to try for powder and loads. Any suggestions or ideas or just common general practices would be greatly appreciated.

I think you won the best Muzzleloader out there. I have been shooting mine now for 4 years. The only thing I’ll say is do not try to shoot the max grains of powder thru it. I find mine shoots best with either 100 or 110 grains of tripple 7. I usually use 2 pellets of 30 grains and 1 of 50 to get to 110. One other thing is in regards to the fiber optic sights. Not sure if they changed anything since I got mine. Mine had the Green on the rear and red on the front sight. I could not see the red well in low light. I contacted them and they sent me a set of Green for the front and red for the rear. I ended up keeping green all the way around. Not much else I can share – Get out there and shoot it. Let us all know how it works for you. Best of luck this season

November 1, 2010 at 9:01 pm #91023I use t/c bore butter w/ natural lube, to season the barrel, t/c #9 bore cleaner to clean the barrel. I also shoot 100 grains of Triple 7 and love it! You can use more powder if you like but its not nessasary, I have seen deer shot a killed cleanly with only 50 grains! I shoot 3 shots then a dry patch, full clean after 6 or 9 shots
November 1, 2010 at 11:51 pm #91051Shoot it a lot! Clean it after every shot for the first 20 while breaking it in. My TC Omega didn’t shoot to its potential until I’d put about 100 rounds through it. Powders are personal preference, like stated. The TC shockwave sabots seems to shoot best by far out of my gun, they are the bullets made for the gun after all. Try out some different bullets to see what you like, but 2 points – #1 don’t waste your time on powerbelts! they are inaccurate and blow apart on impact and #2 whatever sabots you choose – you want them to fit TIGHT. Seemingly the tighter the better, you’ll be surprised at how much pressure you may need to seat that bullet down the barrel.

A great gun. Last year I bought the Nikon omega scope w the bdc reticles. I was really impressed with it. Sighted in right on at 100 yds w 250 grain shockwave and 150 grains of pellets. I shot a buck at 160 yds last year and the bdc reticles were right on the money. It was during the shotgun season. Everyone has there own opinions and what works for them, just gotta start shooting. Gd Luck
November 2, 2010 at 11:14 am #91105I use 2 pellets 777,CLEAN AFTER EVERY SHOT,especially sighting in. I cant agree with above. My 290gr Powerbelts are just as accurate as my .243 and have great knockdown power. Its all what you prefer and do with it,every gun is different.Try some different bullets and see what your gun prefers. My Omega loses accuracy if I shoot more than 100grs. Good luck!

X2 – I’ve never had any problems with the powerbelts. I do prefer the platinum series though – By far the easiest loading bullet.

They loaded awesome and grouped perfect in my gun just did not like the severe lack of knockdown power, meaning poor penetration and retention.
November 5, 2010 at 1:08 am #91530My omega won’t group powerbelts and they suck to load. I shoot 2 50 grain 777’s and a 250 grain TC shockwave. It is very acurate and I have had no problems with killing deer with it. One bad thing about the shockwave bullets is that the copper jacket almost always seperates from the core I would like to see them stay together. I’m thinking of trying the bonded shockwaves for next year.
November 5, 2010 at 10:11 pm #91657Thanks everyone. I am all set to try it out tomorrow. One more question first though. After shooting and then the thorough cleaning, do you put run a patch with some regular gun oil down the barrel or do you recommend something else?
November 7, 2010 at 1:04 am #91738Well I threw some lead into the wind today. It was pretty cool when the first big plume of smoke cleared the barrel. I wasn’t real impressed with the groupings I got. It was pretty brisk and my first time shooting it so hopefully I can get it dialed in with some different bullets. One more thing. After the cleaning, what do you guys recommend I do with the breech plug? I bought some breech plug grease I believe it was called. Do you put some on the threads and reinstall it or just leave it out? Thanks a bunch everyone!
November 18, 2010 at 2:18 am #93243Wow! With a little time on the range and a load the gun likes, you can really dial these things in. Easy Glides 250 Grain Shockwave Sabots with 100 grains of 777 did the trick.

I grease the threads and put it back in
November 19, 2010 at 7:39 pm #93524My experience echos many of the comments above. I have been shooting a TC Omega in .45 for 4 years and loved it so much I also bought the .50 in the Z5 with weathershield.
Powder charge – I agree 100-110 grains has been best for me.
Powder – I shot several brands and settled on the Triple 7 but mostly shoot the loose powder and not the pellets. I did just buy some 50 grain pellets to use in my .50
Bullets – The powerbelts load super easy but the deer I killed with the .45 had the bullets badly frag and they retained almost no mass. I like the Hornady and TC shockwaves and will be testing the SST’s soon.
Keep working with different bullets and or loads and you’ll get her dialed into killin machine.
Good luck – nothing like a powder cloud to get ya going
