Scope Mounting

What is the best way to make sure the scope cross hairs are level with the gun? I put a level line on the wall and when I shoulder the gun it shows they are level. I tried putting the gun in a vise but with no exactly flat surfaces not sure what else to do.

Level is a very loose term, since everyone holds a firearm differently. I set mine in a lead sled and get it close. Then I shoulder it with my eyes closed. When I open my eyes, I should have a full field of view and the cross hairs squared to my view.

I see guys putting a torpedo level against the frame of the gun or laser sighting the top dead center based on the scope mount bore holes. For me, that doesn’t work. I hold all my rifles slightly counter clockwise. My daughter is just the opposite and holds slightlty clockwise to top dead center. Just my opinion, but the true top dead center is the TDC of the barrel is where it is at at the time I squeeze the trigger.

Ok, thanks. The cross hairs are level to how it’s held. I just thought that the cross hairs had to be level to the gun for accuracy.

What I do is level the gun with a torpedo usually there is a flat spot either across the rings or the base, then set the scope in the rings and place level on top of the up down torrent. Best way I’ve found that’s cheap

If your scope has a ballistic plex or BDC reticle it would be very important to have your scope mounted correctly. The only other problem I see if not mounted properly is, it would make it harder to get sighted in. If your scope was twisted a little bit right and you wanted to move the POI straight left, you couldn’t do it. Just my $.02

I start out the same but found the torrent to be untrue. Place the gun in a gun vise, level across the scope base. A small level used for string lines works best. Then if your lucky and have a lazer like I do shoot it on the wall. Look through the scope and adjust to the lazer line while keeping the gun in the vise level.
