Rifle Round Questions

I’m buying my son the Marlin youth rifle for this season. I was going to get him a .243 but also see it comes in 7mm-08. How much more does the 7mm-08 kick? If it is a big difference I could get a managed recoil round to help him out. I’ve never shot either of these rounds so some input would be appreciated. I was sure on the .243 but then thought about the 7mm-08 to get a heavier bullet, Maybe it isn’t an issue though.
    Thanks, DT

.243 is a very good round and very effective on whitetails. If your thinking elk, I would go with more umph

You never mention how old your youth is? Average size? I think I would hing on the 7mm o8. I believe it a much better all around caliber. He’d never need to have another rifle. My son is not very big and he shoots my 308 well. The 7mm 08 is very comparable to a 308. They don’t have much if any more recoil.

I wouldn’t hesitate with either round. I don’t think you can make a bad choice here.

I just won the Marlin XS7Y in .243 on gunbroker.com. I guess there is no more questioning it.

WOW – I was looking at the same model for my daughter in a .243 Nice pea shooter, it comes factory pillered with the raised cheek on the stock. Very easy to adjust the trigger on those too. Personally, I am very hesitant to go under 3.5# for kids.

Do you load your own, or shoot factory loads? My nephew shoots the same gun. His load is a Barnes TTSX 80gr / Fed 210 primer / and 44.2gr of H4350 set .045 off of the lands for hunting large game. He has a second load that I don’t have in my book that he uses for Prairie dogs at 400yrds all day long

He’ll enjoy that for years to come!

I will be shooting factory as I don’t reload at this time. I looked at many guns before I bought this and it seems like the best deal with the best action. I was very disapointed in the Remington 770’s action and the safe was very small on the mossberg 100atr super bantam.
