    It felt dang good!

It’s about time being so busy and having a few setbacks, getting a chance to shoot with some good folks was a refresher. This last Saturday there was a cold bore event not to far from home.

Cold bore events make you have to think a little and calculate your shot placement, you only get one chance at the target no sight in’s or warm ups – one shot for one hit per distance.

The first target was a 6” dot at 600 yards – when your name or number is called it’s your turn to get on the stand and fire one shot and get it done, we had a great day with temps in the 50s, a 7 mph wind hitting us from behind and shifting some this all keeps it interesting. When everyone was done I finished pretty decent with a direct hit on the 6” spot just a 1”1/2 from dead center.

Then on to the 880 yard round using the same 6” dot,

On this round I should of restarted I could sense that the rifle didn’t feel right in the shoulder when settling in and the recoil was weak and felt so/so, well I end up 14” high right of the dot at 1 o’clock not bad at a half a mile but not where it should be.

After that round they had a 3 shot group event at 880 yards again, this should be interesting seeing how well everyone could place 3 bullets in a tight group in a short period of time. Here you where scored only on how tight your group was and not in reference to the dot.

I ended up having a clean round fired on the first, my second shot the cross hairs of the scope drifted slightly right in the spot when the gun fired and the last shot felt clean again. End result 2 bullet holes on top of the dot 5”apart and sure enough my drifter was 10” to the right all three bullet were almost straight across in line, I think the drifter may have been a ½” lower then the other 2 rounds. Honestly I liked it, I was beat by a 7” group but I still was cool with my results. I also was commended for being the only shooter to group in the area of the dot. The time span on my three rounds fired at the 880 yard target was around 25 seconds.

All in all it was a great time we all had a blast.

Sounds fun! I took a couple hours to shoot a few new loads for a 270 and a 22/250. Eliminated a lot and found a few to work on. Felt good to feel it in the shoulder and too see a big pile of brass

Is the Howa still shooting well? What do you have for your 270 setup?

I agree nothing like collecting empty brass.

Howa is a tack driver. I have no hesitation on 570 yards or less. I couldn’t ask for anything to perform any better with the factory Howa and the Burris XTR!

.270’s are a Remington 7600 pump and a Browning A-bolt. Both are just deer hunting rifles and are set up for under 400 yrds. I’ve had a lot of problems with the A-Bolt not patterning well with any factory loads. The lands is so far forward in that gun, that I almost can not seat a Barnes TSX 130 or 140 gr in the case. Not smart to do I guess, but I left the trim length on the brass .015 long to get a little more seating/crimping depth. Groups are now 1/2″ @100yrds with 4831SC(max load)/Barnes TSX130gr,RP case and WLR primes (set .021 off the lands) I can’t get the bullet any closer or it will not seat properly
