Gun Finishing Question

I own a Benelli Super Black II. It is in awesome working orders, and shoots when i want it to but it is not in the best condition. Since it is mainly my waterfowling gun it is dropped in the mud, water, and who knows what else. I have looked into getting it dipped and have had a gunsmith tell me that i could also wire wheel the finish off it, getting all the surface rust off and paint it the way i like. My question is. Has anyone ever heard of finishing a gun with that truck bed liner. I have sprayed it myself on the rockers of my truck and it is very nice. Just want everyones opinions before i would go ahead and do this. Kind of a bad idea to be experiment with a 1300 dollar gun. Thanks alot.
By the way the pink fletchings in the background are not for my bow, just to make that clear.

I would try one of the do it yourself dip kits before I did bed liner. Take wire brush to it and get he rust off then dip.

If you are worried about experimenting with a $1300 gun, why wouldn’t you just have taken better care of it to start with?

If it makes you feel any better, it’s not a $1300 gun anymore, so go ahead and experiment (within the borders of safety) and let us know how it turns out!

Trying to keep a gun mint AND use it effectively in the field can be mutualy exclusive exercises. I look at my shotguns as tools. I cant afford to worry about scratching them or getting them wet AND focus on bird hunting. I just give them extra care after the hunt. I’m a little more picky with my rifles because it’s rare I’m forced to drag them through brush. Given your situation I say why not try to cover up the damage to prevent it from getting worse?

I couldn’t agree more Mike. Shotguns like this are tools meant to use, submerge, fish ducks out of the pond. My old 870 has more orange than black on it now days. But, she still fires everytime I pull the trigger. I’m hoping this winter to refinish it. One of those things on my to do list…

Because like others have said, it is hard to keep a gun in mint condition if it is hunted with. Yeah, i use and abuse it but it still fires everytime. I just want to fix the surface rust problem before it starts pitting the barrel.

Very good point! I just might have to give it a try now. Im just worried about how much heat that truck bed liner spray can take. I might experiment with a piece of scrap metal and heat it up with that stuff on it.

That is the exact same way mine is, more orange then black. But if it still fires who cares. All them scratches and nicks on my barrel are from hunts, and with them were memories. For example, i have a bunch of small scrathes all over my barrel, it was from a hunt a 3 years ago spring turkey hunting. It happened from the poles of a blind over my back along with my gun while i was carrying mine and my uncles turkeys out of the field. A day i will never forget.
