What can anyone tell me about this firearm? Value and history would be great. The serial number is stamped right behind the trap door. Just on the barrel right in front of the trap door is a verticle VB and a small symbol I cant make out. Has an eagle and US SPRINGFIELD along side. Sorry pics arent very good.

I read somewhere that there isnt a model 1878 it was just a wore out stamp that made the 1873 look like 1878. I am not sure on that but just throwing it out there.

Do you know any of the history of this particular gun? It appears to be refinished, which would hurt it’s value considerably. It also has modern sights. I believe it should have a simple blade front sight and graduated ladder rear sight. This would hurt the value also.

It is a cool gun though. Just imagine what it has seen in the last 140 years!

B-g G is right on for the price if it wasn’t refinished. The grand father in law has one of these also. His is the cabine style with the cleaning rod that doubled as a bayonet(sp). It had a pyramid shaped tip to the one end of his. You should be able to find more on it on springfields history site.
