WITH A HUNT TO ILLINOIS WITH MY WIFE COMING UP THIS FALL I NEED TO PUT TOGETHER A SLUG GUN.I KNOW THERE IS ALOT OF NEW AMMO OUT THERE AND WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS USED SOME OF THE NEW STUFF. LOTS OF ARTICLES TALKING ABOUT 200 YARD ACCURACY WITH SPECIFIC LOADS AND BARRELS. ANY THOUGHTS? I WILL BE USING 12 GUAGE FOR SURE, NOT SURE WHAT BULLET WEIGHTS AND TWIST RATES GO TOGETHER WELL. THANKS IN ADVANCE

I got a remington 870 with a fully rifled barrel open sights and shoot Hornady SST 200 gr. The best I’ve shot out of my gun. . My father shoots the same but with a scope and has no problems with it. Would say Hornadys are the way to go

I use a winchester 1300 with a rifled barrel and shoot the remington copper sabots, 2 3/4″, and have killed deer out to 90 yards with it.

I really like my Mossberg 695, bolt action slug 12ga, with a good scope on it, and shooting the Federal Barnes Expander Sabots. Amazingly accurate.

I’m a little late on this but you have plenty of time. Last year I bought a Remington 870 SPS Super slug and put a 2-7 by 32 scope on it. Off a lead sled I could get a 3 shot group at 100 yards to be just a bit bigger than a quarter with 2 3/4′ remington acutip slugs. I didn’t try any farther than that because I don’t shoot past 100 much. I shot 10 diferant slugs and out of this gun 2 3/4″ was allways a tighter group than 3″. 2nd best was federals barnes expander tipped and third was 2 3/4″ fusion I think also made by federal. The hornaday SST wasn’t far behind I could easily hold a 3″ group with them at 100 yards. I also noticed the bullet hole from the fusions is about half the size of most other slugs. I did manage to kill two does and the acutips put them down on the spot wich most deer slugs will do if put in the right place. Good luck I had a lot of fun finding what rounds my gun liked best. I suggest a lead sled if you are going to shoot many because even a 2 3/4″ slug will rock you after you shoot enough of them. And once you start to feel them you won’t know if it was you or the bullet that was off.

I shoot a Marlin 512 Slugmaster bolt gun (28″ fully rifled barrel), scoped with a Bushnell Trophy 1.75-4.5 x 32. I have found the Winchester Supreme Partition Gold 2 3/4″ to be the most accurate through this set-up. The 3″ Partition Golds sound like a good idea, but they were a little less consistent and “only” 100 FPS faster. I’ll “sacrifice” speed for accuracy.

I’ve also tried the Hornady SSTs, and they were pretty wild through my bolt gun. My uncle had the same problem with ’em through his Remington 870 with a fully rifled barrel and open sights.

Maybe the Hornadys would be okay through an autoloader because they’re so wild and inconsistent you’d be better off to just “spray and pray”.
