Input on a Remington 770?

I’m almost certain I will not find the Ruger 96/44 I want for my son in time for gun deer opener. Today I came across three brand new Remington 770’s with a Bushnell scope for $389. Any input good or bad on this weapon?

I do not own one but I have handled one, and I did not like the action. I have heard they do shoot good. The price is right.

Exactly where I’m at. For the price I don’t expect a Sub M.O.A. Vanguard but I do not want something that rattles into pieces when fired either. I did as much research as time allowed last night and found most that criticize it do so based only on the price. I am not a fan of snobbery so I discounted them. Then there were those like you and I that only handled them and have pretty much the same opinion, feels cheesy but may be a good value. And then there are just a couple owners that say they shoot ok but rattle.

Some have said Stevens and Mossberg make better guns for similar to lower prices. If that’s true I need to consider those as well. Any input or ideas would certainly be welcome.

I helped a friend select a new to him “used” rifle this fall for deer season. He purchased a Reminton 770 30-06 and for the price it appears to be a very good gun and seems solid. I was able to shoot it a couple times and it shot nice and seemed to a have a good action.

I was a little leery for him as the reviews on the action has been talked about previously, but I think it is like anything, take care of it, clean it, oil it, and watch it this gun will hold up just fine.

    Good luck on your search

Thanks! I also found the gun cheaper at another locale for $319. Can’t beat that IMO.

Don’t know much about the 770, but that Stevens is a nice looking/feeling gun for the money. We bought one in a .243 from Cabelas for our upcoming NWTF banquet in March. For $399, you’re basically getting a Savage without the bottom floorplate and accu-trigger. Did I mention it’s in camo with a scope attached?
